Guts – Le Bienheureux

By | Music

Guts – French electronic beat-maker and producer with a heavy hip-hop base pours his soul into his music and takes us on a mysterious and uplifting journey across continents. Guts is one of the co-founding members of Alliance Ethnik, the inspirational and trend setting hip-hop French band from the 90s.

His interesting use of contrast captures a whole range of moods and emotions – from a trance-like state to a carefree and joyful one. Guts’ positive island vibes that transcend his music leave us with a sense of intrigue and longing. Let him take you away to more than one place at a time as he tells a beautiful and sentimental story about how music and a joie de vivre can come together to form a life of serenity, peace of mind and perfect harmony.

Your first album release Simple et Funky in 1995 went platinum. How would you describe your experience with Alliance Ethnik?
The most beautiful experience one could dream of is when a band is formed and the magic works spontaneously. We arrived at the right moment and with the right musical and artistic direction. As our budget was “No Limit”, we were able to ask our label for anything we wanted, so we asked Bob Power to produce and mix the album… Bob Power is to post production and mixing what Ennio Morricone is to film music – a virtuoso… He created numerous albums in the 90s that turned into mythical ones. For example: A Tribe Called Quest, D’Angelo, Erykah Badu, De La Soul, The Roots, Common, etc… My experience with the band lasted 8 years, with memorable tours and travels, incredible encounters and collaborations.

Alliance Ethnik was active up until 1999 and it was only in 2007 that you released your first solo album Guts le Bienheureux. What were you up to during that time and what made you decide to go solo?
After Alliance Ethnik, I thought for a long time about heading for New York and taking my chances in the hip hop capital, but a love affair kept me in France. As a result, I composed and produced music for a diversity of French artists like Big Red, Passi, Svinkels, Sage Poêtes de la Rue. I also had some very enriching experiences in Africa and Jamaica in those days. As the years went by, I lost my way and grew tired of collaborating, to the extent that I left France for good. I went to live in Ibiza, which was the perfect place to find myself again and to try out my chances as a solo artist… it was the right choice because it worked.
03.01.guts3
The East Coast hip-hop scene has heavily influenced your beats and your time spent in Jamaica and the Caribbean seeps through your music. Can you tell me a little bit about your musical journey and the way in which it has evolved over the years?
It’s true. I have been totally immersed in East Coast hip-hop, which had a great influence on me. Later on, I became extremely interested in the way that music was sampled and recycled in order to produce hip-hop albums. My curiosity and my love for music did the rest. After having discovered the culture of Rhythm and Blues, Soul, Funk, Disco, I discovered Reggae, West-Indies music, South American music, African music and, finally, Eastern European music (Turkey, Poland, Czechoslovakia, Greece, Russia…), I became an album collector and dug into all genres. Recently, I discovered a whole musical heritage from Tobago and Trinidad, which is absolutely incredible. As a result, Mambo and I have decided to release a compilation album on a yearly basis, called Beach Diggin’, which is composed of our little pearls that have never been released.

Since moving to Ibiza from Paris, you’ve founded your own label, Pura Vida Music. What’s the story behind that and how has the gorgeous Spanish island inspired you and your sound?
The idea of founding the label Pura Vida Music came from the desire to release my self-produced second solo album and to form the duo Pura Vida with Mambo. I wanted a visual identity similar to my musical one – something I did with Mambo. The label solely serves as a way to release personal projects, nothing else. It was a good experience but the heavy workload was too much to handle alone.

With regard to Ibiza, I am convinced that it inspires my music. Its peace, its energy, its vibrations, the sun, the sea…. I try to put into my music what I get out of this island. It is no coincidence that I listen to so much West Indies music at the moment… I’ve found harmony in my life and in my music.
03.01.guts4
Where do you get your samples from and what’s the creation process behind the production of your tracks?
Every single one of my samples comes from my vinyl collection. I listen to several discs until I am struck or moved by a sound, a note, a loop, a harmony, a melody, and then I am off. I sample, I cut, I change the pitch and, eventually, I find an angle, an interesting twist and, if it works, I pursue my ideas and follow through with them, even if it sucks at the beginning. Once I find a twist that captivates me, I go on to add the rhythmic part of it as a base layer and then I try to tell a story with some transitions, bridges, variations, accidents…

Your most recent album, Paradise For All, covers a kaleidoscope of colours. The dark, melancholic strings and nostalgic piano lines, mixed with your sunny, reggae-soul and punchy feel-good rhythms, fill your album with a unique atmosphere. What message are you trying to communicate through your music?
A music that helps people to breathe more easily… a music that has virtues… that calms the pain… that makes you want love yourself and to love others.
03.01.guts5
It’s a great and intricate album – I see it as a kind of masterpiece. How has it been received?
I haven’t the slightest clue, as I never read the critics and chronicles of my albums. I don’t give a sh*t. Some people like vegetables, others don’t… it’s the same with my music. Art is ultra subjective, it’s impossible to please everyone and thank goodness for that. I don’t believe that Paradise For All is a complex album and a kind of chef d’oeuvre. It’s rich and diverse, it’s full of contrast, but the one I will be releasing in 2014 will be more complex, much richer and will have even more of a contrast. What could come across as complex is the pleasure that I have in fusing tracks with very different colours and universes in the same album. I don’t stick to one single direction and that’s what interests me… a change of path and unimaginable stories.

Your Django Remix EP came out in early 2013. What effect did Tarantino’s film have on you?
I don’t like Tarantino’s films at all. I’m not a fan of violence and blood in the cinema but his remake of Django is absolutely wonderful! Without a doubt, it’s my favourite film of 2013. He re-adapted the film Django in a great way and with great talent. For a long time, I wanted to re-adapt the soundtrack, I had dreamt of doing it and I loved doing it, when it came to it. I love the duality in Tarantino’s film. I like his mix of humour and darkness in certain scenes. I like the silence that alternates with the music and dialogue. I like contrast and that’s precisely what influences my music.

What can we look forward to in 2014?
2014 will certainly be the busiest and most exciting year since the end of Alliance Ethnik. I’m in the middle of writing my new album, which is supposed to be out in Sept 2014 and is the most ambitious and certainly the best one yet. I’ve invited quite a few artists from the other side of the Atlantic and by doing so, have gone back to my first loves. I’m also working on a French Hip Hop project with Blanka (Jukebox Champions/ La Fine Equipe), which should be out in May 2014, as well as another compilation album of Beach Diggin’ with Mambo. The end of the year will see the album release of a new artist called Asagaya, whom I absolutely adore. It’s an album that I have partly produced. Asagaya deals with all the musical compositions, whilst I ensure its recognition.

Ten Soundcloud Tracks You Ought To Have Heard This Year

By | Music

By Tej S. Haldule

It’s the end of 2013, and as a go-to source for everyday online discoveries, Soundcloud still remains unmatched. We’ve cobbled together our favourite tracks from this year that are available on the platform and put them in a handy list for your listening convenience.

They’re picked from a variety of genres; some are relatively famous where others are obscure. Some are off the year’s standout albums while others are one-off greats. All, we think you’ll agree, are intrinsically special. Curating great music for you, after all, is what we here at Creation 5 are best at.

In no particular order, then:

Haim – The Wire (Tourist. Remix)
It’s impressive how utterly Brit producer Tourist. has reinterpreted all-girl sibling trio Haim’s pop rock jaunt ‘The Wire‘. To transform it into an earnest dance-worthy mix, he’s pressed a bare percussive skeleton through longing vocal trails, bringing it all together over a spirited backbeat. The result, as you’ll see for yourself, is both imaginative and downright addictive.

No Joy – Last Boss
Montreal shoegaze duo No Joy have had a great year, musically. Their November EP ‘Pastels And Pass Out’ starred this track as lead single, and for good reason. It’s unclear whether ‘Last Boss’ was inspired by the Mario videogame series – but while you’re floating through thick guitar haze on the lost voice of singer Jasamine White-Gluz, it seems quite irrelevant.
This is music to daydream to.

Frame/Frame – Pastels
New Delhi producer Frame/Frame released his debut EP this year, and it featured his first truly arresting music – ‘Pastels’, combined with one of those rare videos that does justice to its source material, was easily one of the catchiest songs we’ve been hooked to all year. Find out why.

Gesaffelstein – Pursuit
French techno producer Gesaffelstein released his debut LP this year, and teamed up with Fleur and Manu to create a masterful video for this evil, throbbing track. Feature ‘Pursuit’ on any dance mix to create an instant party centered around its ritualistic bassline.

David Bowie – Love Is Lost (Hello Steve Reich Mix by James Murphy)
James Murphy of LCD Soundsystem has been in the news lately for producing the last Arcade Fire album, but his remix of David Bowie’s ‘Love Is Lost’ was his year’s true high point, rebuilt around the sound of hands clapping in a mammoth ten-minute masterpiece that has to be experienced to be believed.

Four Tet – Parallel Jalebi
Four Tet, one of the largest names in British electronica today, dropped a massive rarities mix 0181 earlier in 2013 that was a definite winner. This track, however, is the stunning lead single off his newest album Beautiful Rewind. The ethereal female loop that is deftly rewound over throughout the track is the real hero here, though Four Tet’s flawless production helps cement it as a playlist staple.

Forest Swords – The Weight Of Gold
This lead single off Engravings, arguably one of the top albums of the year, is a glorious distortion of strings, booming foghorns and jittery guitar-work. ‘The Weight Of Gold’ (and indeed this entire haunting LP), deserves to have its depths plumbed over and over. Tune in and no doubt you will be forced to oblige.

Apparat – K&F Thema (Pizzicato)
In a career best moment, German veteran Apparat released his most astonishing album yet, Krieg Und Frieden, this year. It’s tough to choose between the classical electronica compositions on the record, extensions on his work for the German theatrical version of War and Peace. ‘K&F Thema (Pizzicato)’ is plucked to a longing tune until the violin sweeps in to repaint everything, and is perhaps the most directly approachable track on the record.

Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr. – Dark Water
If there were ever a 2013 earworm particularly deserving of attention, it’s Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr.’s intensely hummable ‘Dark Water’. The instantly recognizable whistled refrain that punctuates ominous pop sensibilities is only a quick reminder of exactly how smart this entire album, The Speed Of Things, really is. Give it a listen in its entirety and you won’t come away disappointed. In the mean time, this album shiner is up for free download on Soundcloud.

Kittens Of The Internet – Living The Dream
New Zealand has seen a surge in talent in 2013, be it underage pop sensation Lorde or this year’s Booker winner Eleanor Catton. With this first single, Auckland duo Kittens Of The Internet hop on that bandwagon and establish themselves as more than just a clever band name – this sultry voice will stay in your head all day.

Wally López – Follow Me!

By | Music

Interview by Carlos Sánchez Urbano

Everyone wants to take his photo at airports and clubs. He is responsible for “Just a Little More Love Wally López remix “, the remix that placed David Guetta on the map and ended up selling hundreds of thousands of copies.

He’s best friends with the ex-footballer from Real Madrid, Jose Maria Gutierrez “Guti”. Wally López was a suburban kid, raised in the Madrid neighborhood of San Blas, who is now in demand in the DJ booths of the most important clubs in the world. He lives between Miami and Ibiza.

This past August he released his first album “Follow me!” which has already been a great success and his Youtube views are now counted in millions. He is a true ‘electronic pop star’ working with voices like Jasmine Villegas (Justin Bieber’s Ex), Kreesha Turner and Jamie Scott (Graffiti 6).

Wally spins in Ibiza’s most select and exclusive clubs, those that you can only enter by invitation or by knowing someone in the Ibiza night scene. His name appears amongst the top DJ’s in the world and he is the only Spanish DJ to make 2 “essential remixes” on BBC1.

Pursued by corporations and sponsors (Pioneer, Red Bull, Oakley …), Pepsi Spain see him as a “top” artist on the same level as sponsorships like Beyoncé in the US. He is an Idol on the radio airwaves with his ‘Maxima FM’ spot and a guru in the social media world. Wally López is one of the undisputed Spanish stars in the world of EDM.

When did you decide that your life would be devoted to music?
It all began as a hobby and when I saw my career as a pilot cut short by my short-sightedness I decided to go for music 100%.

20.12.wallylopez3 20.12.wallylopez4

What inspired you to create “Follow me!”?
Well, firstly it was due to the interest of EMI / Parlophone in supporting me if I embarked on this adventure….and the truth is that I was not inspired by anything in particular. I just wanted to bring my vision of contemporary pop to an album that would last in the memories of those who hear it.

How did the Follow Me presentation go in Ibiza? Are you happy with how it was received?
I always want more, but I’m happy seeing it was my first album. In Ibiza the presentation was absolutely brilliant.
20.12.wallylopez5

You have the advantage of having several major sponsors who rely on your talent. For example Pepsi, who has produced the single “Now is the time” with the vocals of Jasmine Villegas. How does it feel to work under such a big corporation?
I don’t see it that way – for me they are part of the team, helping me to continue with my career. Pepsi are very supportive and I’m very happy about it.

What collaborations can be found in this work?
All kinds, but without a doubt my collaboration with Sister Bliss of Faithless I am extremely excited about, because of what it represents to me.

Will there be a ‘Wally Lopez before’ and a ‘Wally Lopez after’ Follow Me?
Yes and no (laughs). I think it’s another step in my career but I don’t think it will be a ‘before and after’.

Given that you’ve remixed very important people in your career … What is the remix you still dream of?
Madonna, without any hesitation!
20.12.wallylopez6

You’ve been around the world on more than one occasion, what have these experiences contributed to you musically and personally?
Traveling has made me the person I am today, it has removed radical thoughts and made me focus my thoughts in a more comprehensive manner.

Do you have any habits or rituals inside the DJ booth?
I can’t DJ with a shirt, jumper or anything with long sleeves, and I normally remove my watch.

You started in radio, The Eagles, Top Radio, LocaFM, Flash, Max Fm … What are your memories of these times, what has stayed with you?
The truth is that all of my memories are positive and nice, I delete the bad ones and try to convert them to good! I’ve learnt a lot from all of these experiences and I am so glad to have had the opportunity of working for many years on the radio, which I love dearly.

Everyone talks about you as a pioneer of House music in Spain, how do you feel about this statement and how do you see the current situation of House music?
I’ve always said that I’m not pioneer of anything, but as I get older I do see some merit in my career and I hope that someday I will be recognized for this (laughing). To answer your second question, if I’m honest, I see the current situation of House quite poorly.
20.12.wallylopez7

In Ibiza you DJ in The Tower of Ushuaia, undoubtedly one of the most exclusive places on the island. What does Ibiza mean to you and what is so special about it?
I also DJ in Lio and in Blue Marlin. These are the three top exclusive clubs on the island, no doubt. It gives me a new world and an audience that I’ve never had before.
Ibiza is the max…. it took me in its arms and I reciprocate with infinite love! ☺ I hope my son grows up there and can enjoy the totally different life that is Ibiza …. Children from all around the world playing together, fantastic!

You’re the owner of two record labels, a DJ school and Tremena, a T-shirt brand. How do you get the time to look after so many things?
The truth is that without my team Factomania Group it would be totally impossible to cover everything and carry out all these projects. From here, I send all my thanks and respect to them.

What is a typical day in the life of Wally Lopez?
Lately I divide my hours between going to the gym, making music and enjoying time with my son. As from January I will start traveling again, non-stop.

How would you describe yourself in just 5 words?
Person … who … lives … a … dream.

What does Wally Lopez have in mind for the future?
Remain being happy.

1-The Ricky Gervais Guide To…
16.12.comedypodcasts-2

Top of our users list is ”The Ricky Gervais Guide To…” with Stephen Merchant, award-winning writer and Karl Pilkington, plonker. You may recognize the trio from the famous, or, infamous documentary TV show ”An Idiot Abroad”, in which Ricky and Stephen send Karl off on extreme adventures around the globe, forcing him into situations completely outside of his comfort zone. The results are hilarious. The Ricky Gervais Guide to… is basically a reinvention of The Ricky Gervais Show – the world’s most downloaded podcast according to the Gusiness Book of Records. As of March 2011 the podcast had been downloaded 300 million times!
The shows are available on iTunes and Audible.co.uk.

2-Bill Burr’s Monday Morning Podcasts

16.12.comedypodcasts-4 16.12.comedypodcasts-3

Second on our list ”Monday Morning Podcasts” by Bill Burr is basically a bunch of ramblings from a stand-up comedian who has a love affair with the F word. You’ve been warned. Profanity aside, this guy was born with a gift, everything that comes out his mouth is worthy of at least a half-assed chuckle. Also we think it’s pretty cool that he’s been in a couple of episodes of AMC’s epic series ”The Walking Dead”, and keep an eye out ’cause he may be appearing in more. To conclude with his own words: ”I love my dog. I hate bankers. I have issues with women. In my head, I’m a great guy.”

3-The Nerdist – Chris Hardwick

16.12.comedypodcasts-5 16.12.comedypodcasts-6

Making it to number 3 is ‘Nerdist’ by Chris Hardwick, and he puts it perfectly:
“I am Chris Hardwick. I am on TV a lot and have a blog at nerdist.com. This podcast is basically just me talking about stuff and things with my two nerdy friends Jonah Ray and Matt Mira, and usually someone more famous than all of us. Occasionally we swear because that is fun. I hope you like it, but if you don’t I’m sure you will not hesitate to unfurl your rage in the ‘reviews’ section because that’s how the Internet works.”
http://www.nerdist.com/podcasts

4-The Bugle – John Oliver and Andy Zaltzman

16.12.comedypodcasts-7 16.12.comedypodcasts-8

At number 4 is ”The Bugle” – a Podcast institution – featuring John Oliver and Andy Zaltzman. Every week these two prattle on in their gruff extremely-British voices in this satirical news podcast. With over 252 episodes, the fan base is massive and even though the show is no longer distributed by TimesOnline, it’s still going strong. You can expect them to touch on some sensitive subjects with surprising comedy. Guaranteed to make you spit out your morning coffee full blast across the room. Their own description of the show goes a little like ”The Bugle podcast. Entertaining and misleading The Universe since 2007. The Bugle is Planet Earth’s last, best source of hope. And satire. And lies.”
Riveting stuff.
http://thebuglepodcast.com

5-By The Way, In Coversation with Jeff Garlin

16.12.comedypodcasts-9 16.12.comedypodcasts-10

Last but not least on our list is ‘By The Way, In Conversation.’ hosted by Jeff Garlin
Every episode is recorded live at Largo in LA. Jeff Garlin has an array of celebrity show-biz friends who are nice enough to endure the entirety of the show with him. The topics veer off to literally any random occurance that happened in either persons day, no topics are off limits. Seriously entertaining, and gives great insight into the celebrity guests’ thoughts and views, touching on subjects you’d never of thought to ask. How often do you get to have casual couch-chatter with a Hollywood A-lister? We do advise listeners to play them in small doses though, as Jeffs voice is the loudest and most heard throughout the alloted time. He can get annoying, but we think it’s totally worth the comedy gold.

The Diva of Disco and Soul

By | Music

She’s fabulous, grandiose and oozing star quality. Sophie Gatward interviews singer, songwriter and TV Star Yanela Brooks, Cuba’s very own musical goddess.

Yanela was born in Guantanamo (Cuba) in 1981. She was born into a musical family and started her piano career at the tender age of 7 at the Samuel Manuel’s Music Conservatory. At 15 years she joined the Art School in Cuba and specialized in Chorale Direction forming her own orchestra called “Yanela y las chicas del Sabor”.
08.12.yanela-2

In 2000, Yanela decided to go solo and recorded her first LP “Tu Eres libre” with the French Record Company, Pastel Productions, which reached the top spot in the charts in the French islands. Subsequently, she was the protagonist of a musical along with Rafael Basurto Bolero, leader of ‘Los Panchos’, with whom she performed on some the best stages in Spain and was also in the Spanish feature film “Tango”.

Yanela has now settled in Marbella and you can find her performing at any noteworthy event on the Costa del Sol, such as The Concordia Gala and The Davies Cup and has regular shows at the prestigious Kempinksi Hotel.
08.12.yanela-3

Devoted to Blues, Soul, Rock and Smooth Jazz she has been baptized by her fans on the Costa del Sol as the ‘Diva of Disco and Soul’ and has won great acclaim for her energetic and compelling live performances.

Your shows go on for hours, where does all that magical energy come from when you’re giving 110% all of the time whilst singing, dancing, playing the piano, mixing your music and getting the crowd going?
Hahaha, thank you so much for the compliments. I do everything with passion, with my whole heart. I put my entire feelings into everything that I do. The energy comes from my love of work. Music and art are my passion.

You come from a family of musicians. Tell us a bit more about this musical family of yours.
I still remember my Grandfather when I was a child. He practiced on his trumpet everyday, and he would say to me as I watched him: ”Look girl, in life if you want to be the number one, you have to live for your profession. You have to dedicate completely in body and soul.” Those words have always stayed with me. Also my Mum is behind me, supporting me in everything that I do. My friends, my teachers, my boyfriend, a lot of people have been there, supporting me since the beginning.

08.12.yanela-4 08.12.yanela-5

You once formed your own Orchestra ”Yanela y Las Chicas del Sabor”. Tell us some more about this and how it helped you get to where you are today.
This time in my life was very important for me, because I had the opportunity to grow up as a composer, a pianist, a singer, a dancer and a business woman. But most importantly this was a time where I learned about life in general and the people in it.
08.12.yanela-6

Anyone who knows anything about you, remembers you from the Spanish reality TV show ”La Voz” a show similar to X Factor and American Idol.
Yes, it was an honor to be part of the first edition of ‘La Voz’ Spain.

How did you come to be on the show?
My Mum saw the advertisement on TV, and put me on the list without telling me! We both were number one fans of the TV show ‘The Voice’ – USA and I always said that if one day The Voice comes here to Spain, I wanna participate.

Can you describe your experience throughout this time? Positives and negatives?
My experience was wonderful, I never liked reality TV but I got hooked on The Voice from the beginning. Sure, little negative things happened while on the show, but I always prefer to stick with the positive. I’m proud to be part of ‘The Voices’ family.

You now have a new CD out. What can people expect?
Yes, we worked very hard on it and the results have been very exciting. People can expect a little of everything. Everybody who knows me and knows my show, knows that I love mixes: slow songs, fast rhythm to dance to, or emotional ballads to cry to. Several genres are included on the CD like soul, dance, rock, blues and jazz. I think you’ll like the whole CD.

Where can we buy/download your music?
You can find all of my new songs on iTunes or Spotify. Also my videos on YouTube or at www.yanelabrooks.com

Your single ”Mondays” featuring Brian Cross is a popular hit with a great music video to it. How did you and Brian come up with this song? What was the process?
Working with Brian Cross was a GREAT privilege, the process was very easy, he’s very eccentric, like me, and we understand each other very well. We both always try to find perfection in everything we do.
08.12.yanela-7

This is a big question – Your Hair! – WOW! It has a whole fan club of it’s own. What do you do to it!? It must be a huge effort to maintain.
Hahaha, that makes me laugh, because it’s so true, wherever I go everybody always asks me the question, ”What about your Hair?!”. It’s part of my personality, and my movements on stage. I take a lot of care of my hair, I love it so much, and I’m telling you, I spend A LOT of time and money on it.

Another big question – Your outfits! – another big WOW! With every show you dazzle the crowd with a different sparkly ensemble. Are there any stories behind them? Do you get them especially made for you? They are truly fantastic.
I’m lucky that my Mum is a wonderful fashion designer. The best outfits that I have, are created by her. Also I have many talented friends and they make some of the outfits for my shows. Other than that I’ll get them from London, France, Spain or the USA.

08.12.yanela-8 08.12.yanela-9

Final question, and most important – What can we expect in the future from Yanela Brooks?
Let me tell you, there will be many surprises to come. Just wait and see. I only can say that I will always change my way of life with a positive passion, a wholesome truth, strong authenticity, unwavering energy, and most importantly: an undying HAPPINESS.

The award was presented to her by her mother, Monica Braithwaite after the audience was treated to a video montage showing her career highlights. Her mother said “I know the journey and your career has not always been an easy one, but tonight I applaud and admire you for being so strong and so positive and so humble and so focused. . . I’m so blessed to be part of this historic moment.” Rihanna replied “Thank you so much, I’ll start by saying just about 20 years ago is when I really started making your life a living hell with my ‘annoying little husky man voice,’ you’d call it. And I mean just disrupting the entire neighborhood. . . I annoyed every one of my neighbors.” She finished her acceptance speech by saying: “I can’t believe that at 25 years old I’m holding an Icon award!”

Justin Timberlake performs "Drink You Away" at the 41st American Music Awards in Los Angeles

Justin Timberlake took to the stage armed with an acoustic guitar for his bluesy, rockish hit ‘Drink You Away’. He walked away with ‘Favourite Male Artist’ (Pop/Rock). It was great to see Justin win something at these awards after coming away empty handed from the MTV Europe Music Awards.

Stealing the show, as usual, was Miley Cyrus. Instead of a raunchy, controversial show, Cyrus ended the AMAs with a “cat-astrophic” performance – a giant kitten appeared on the screen behind her, lazily lip-syncing as she belted out her hit single ‘Wrecking Ball’.

50 years of Doctor Who The unforgettable theme song

By | Films

This article was written by Rebecca Jade Hignett – A die hard Doctor Who fan who is to appear on the Graham Norton show this weekend to question David Tennant and Matt Smith.

On 23rd November 1963, the entire world watched one of the most momentous occasions of the 20th century – news coverage of the assassination of John F. Kennedy the day before. However, when everyone else was sat watching that, a cultural phenomenon was born, the first ever episode of Doctor Who.

A programme about a centuries old alien (Time Lord) who traveled through space and time in a telephone box, was almost completely ignored in favour of the news. A week later however, when it was repeated for an audience who were fully concentrated on watching, a new era of television began.

In a show that has consistently broken boundaries of television programming, perhaps the most incredible story is that of the unforgettable theme song.

Written by Ron Grainer and recorded by Delia Derbyshire, it marked the beginning of a new age of score music. It was recorded long before synthesizers were available, and in the most painstakingly slow way – each note had to be taken from individual tapings of a single plucked chord and then transformed into the electronic sound the song is famous for. Some of the most familiar sounds we hear in it were made in hugely unconventional ways – the TARDIS sounds were made by keys running up and down piano strings for example.

After months of meticulous work modifying each note separately, they had to be pieced together in the most incredible way – the tapes were literally cut and stuck together to match the tune. As if that wasn’t enough, they then had to mix all the individual sections of the piece, but given that there was no mixing system available, they invented one themselves. By the end of the process, the track was so unique that Grainer himself asked Derbyshire if he had actually written it!

Nowadays, Murray Gold composes the music for Doctor Who, and has reinvented the theme song three times, each to reflect the personality of the Doctor to which it pertains. He brought out a piece of music named ‘Vale Decem’, written to send off the 10th Doctor in his final episode. This piece of music caused such a stir in the internet community of Doctor Who fans that it has been named the best piece of music from the show by ‘What Culture’.

Doctor Who has even inspired its own genre of music, inspired by the phenomena of Wizard Rock, the Harry Potter rock – Trock, or Time-Lord-Rock. The most prominent Trock band is Chameleon Circuit. Made up of a group of well known British Youtube stars, their album Still Got Legs debuted at number 23 on the Billboard Heatseekers list.

In Doctor Who’s 50 years, it has become so ingrained in British culture that the theme song is known by everyone – it was even performed at Glastonbury in 2010 by Orbital.

The music of the show has evolved from being recorded in a tiny studio to having its own night at the Proms, and the 50th anniversary episode should have the best music yet!

“The Day of the Doctor”is the 50th anniversary special. Written by Steven Moffat, who also serves as executive producer alongside Faith Penhale. It has been described by series producer Marcus Wilson as a “love letter to the fans”. It will be shown on BBC One on 23 November 2013 at 19.50 GMT in both 2D and 3D. The special is due to be broadcast simultaneously in several countries, and will also be shown concurrently in 3D in some cinemas.

Two hemispheres, one harmony

An interview with Gushi & Raffunk
by Sophie Gatward

Gushi & Raffunk is an Electronic Trip Hop duo formed in 2005 by Gushi from Argentina and Raffunk from Italy. They currently live and compose their music in Italy. She, who comes from the southern half of the world and he, who comes from the northern half… two hemispheres, two points, two souls making a unique world.

They began their work together by producing revisited versions for ‘Amnesia Ibiza Chillout Sessions’. They found the chemistry to compose original tracks which eventually would become their first album.
Their latest productions record the releases of “Eyes”, “Travel EP”, “Sound Of You – The Remixes EP”, “Reflection” and “Deep House Flavours” – all works having been released by international labels.

Seeing these two perform live is a treat – their performances are fresh and intimate in lounge chill-out and deep house style. Their DJ sets are more up-tempo club style with live vocals enriching the experience. Aside from all this musical talent though– they are the nicest musicians you will ever have the pleasure to meet. It’s all about the love with Gushi and Raffunk. Love, in the deep, spiritual sense of the word. Love and music – what more could you want?

Gushi & Raffunk is an interesting name combo. Where do these names come from?
Gushi: Thanks for asking! The name Raffunk came out in 2003 and it is the combination of his real first name (Raffaele) and Funk. At that time, he was the lead guitarist of a band which made that genre of music, so the name Raffunk seemed to fit like a glove!
Raffunk: Gushi has a story of its own, as this is her nickname since she was a child. Then, we started to do some little research and discovered that Gu Shi means “Old Poetry” in Chinese language… isn’t this a beautiful coincidence?
21.22.gushiraffunk-3

Musically, you two are a couple. Are you a real couple also?
Let’s leave this one to your imagination… haha!

You both write and compose. What inspires you to start writing and creating a new song? Can you give us some insight into how the process unfolds.
Raffunk: Any visual stimulation or emotion can set the spark alight that starts the whole process of composition. Sometimes it’s a sound, a sample or a drum groove. Other times it can be nature’s sound, a book or a film… Something at the right place in the right moment that touches a specific part of me.
Gushi: For me it is the warm sunlight in my room, contrasting colours in nature, a good song that inspires me, the lives of others, my own urges… Sometimes, I take the guitar and start building a melody, other times I steal (ops! I meant borrow) Raffunk’s compositions and improvise melodies or write some lyrics.
21.22.gushiraffunk-4

Your songs have a calming effect with sweet relaxing melodies, especially in your album ”Eyes”. Can it be a real effort to create this type of sound when life around you is stressful?
Not at all. Music comes from the inside and reflects what you are, feel or desire…

What does a day in the life of Gushi & Raffunk look like?
Although we hate routine, we usually get up in the not-so-early morning and spend time on our own, doing personal stuff, studying, reading or doing everyday life chores. Whereas in the afternoon, we meet at the studio and start working on our musical productions until starvation reminds us that we have to get some fuel.

You do a lot of live performances; at what type of events or venues do you usually get asked to perform?
Well, the situation may vary from one venue to another but we love performing live in every single one. Big, small, comfy or not, the circumstances of the event don’t spoil our enthusiasm. We pay the same attention and devotion to the show and adapt our set according to that moment’s energy.
21.22.gushiraffunk-5

You’re both well-travelled, and have both lived in Italy for big chunks of your life. Would you say that is where you’re now settled for good?
Wouldn’t say so. You never know where choices can take you to and it doesn’t matter where you live in order to make music. We always choose to go after our musical opportunities.

Gushi, from a young age you were influenced by traditional Argentine folk music. What about you Raffunk? What were your musical influences as a youngster?
My first ever discovery was Neil Young, from whom I learnt to strum my first guitar chords. Then, The Beatles came who were followed by the fingerpicking ambassadors (Bruce Cockburn, Jorma Kaukonen) and of course, Blues also entered my life. I can’t leave out my Jazz era (John Coltrane, Sonny Rollins) that led into the first electronic bands. David Sylvian was definitely someone who made me change direction towards intimate and rarefied atmospheres.

Your careers seem to have been steadily growing. Were there any milestones during your life journey in getting to where you are now?
Certainly! The fact that Pete Tong, Carl Cox, Roger Sanchez and Tiësto have chosen some of our tracks (‘To Be Or Not To Be’ & ‘Be Mine’) for their compilations is a huge start! Then, Julian Lennon has crowned ‘End Of The Day’ Track of the Week in his section at Below Zero Beats. Also, ‘Travel’, ‘End of the Day’ & ‘Sound Of You’ were included in important compilations such as ‘Bar Lounge Classics’ (Sony BMG Germany), ‘Global Grooves 4 – Porsche Design’ (winner of the World Luxury Award 2012) and… to be continued!
21.22.gushiraffunk-6

The genres of music that you work with have been recognized as electro-acoustic, chillout lounge, trip-hop, deep house, etc. They are all beautiful genres that interlink with one another. Have you ever considered creating music from a completely different genre?
Actually, we also compose music for documentaries which doesn’t mean anything about the genre… but sometimes our compositions do get another character, somewhere between acoustic and orchestral, as if they were dressed in other colours and fabrics.

You two are a well known duo. Do you ever see yourselves veering off into solo careers? If not, what does the future hold?
Our project GUSHI & RAFFUNK is a beautiful work, something we care about and put all our expectations, energy and strength into. However, this does not refrain us from separate collaborations or parallel projects with other artists, musicians and styles. We’re rather open to it.

If you could stand on a platform, and have the whole world’s attention, just for a minute. What would you say? What would be your message?
Since it would be quite impossible to hug them all, we’d say “Love to love… discover the love inside you and embrace it strongly”.

Here are Gushi & Raffunk’s Sunday Sessions

1. Gushi & Raffunk – Travel
“Travel” is definitely our favourite. It speaks about universal love, pure love that needs nothing but to be. As the fragment reads “…looking through your eyes I can feel everything…” We even wrote a little haiku poem in love’s honour! Hope you enjoy it 🙂

Travel out of love
Falling through the spaces
Embrace life and welcome changes

Travel in the essence of true love
Taste it, feel it, be it
Then, let it go…

2. Gushi & Raffunk – End Of The Day
Sometimes, at the end of the day, we find ourselves looking back into the past. Longing for home, a relationship, anything that makes us set off to a nostalgic yet magical trip through our experiences. It’s about immersing ourselves into the flow of memories, old treasures and new sensations.

3. Gushi & Raffunk – Sound of You
‘Sound of You’ represents our inner sound. It is that private space getting lovingly nourished with feelings and perfumes of life. SOY (title abbreviation which in Spanish means ‘I am’) is the intimate point where everything is brought into life. Our essence…

The Sound of ‘The Hunger Games: Catching Fire’

By | Films

Hope is stronger than Fear

Catching Fire – the highly anticipated sequel to 2012’s ‘The Hunger Games’ that took the world by storm, is celebrating its worldwide release on Friday 22 November. Collecting over $691 million at the box office, The Hunger Games was one of the top 5 most successful movies of 2012. The first “Hunger GamesCD also became the top-selling soundtrack of last year – we take a look at this year’s distinctly different dark and mysterious sounds.

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, just like the first part of the trilogy, features an eclectic mix of artists in its new soundtrack. Just as Katniss (Jennifer Lawrence) hit stardom in the film’s 74th Hunger Games, the soundtrack also features some serious A-list big names like Coldplay, Christina Aguilera and Ellie Goulding pitching in.
19.11.catchingfire-2

The soundtrack itself is a mixed bag, with songs spanning several genres. Who would expect Coldplay, The Weeknd and Santigold to fit together? Or punker Patti Smith and the New Zealand pop phenomenon Lorde? Music Supervisor Alexandra Patsavas managed to connect all these artists forming a powerful-sounding anthem.

Speaking of Lorde, her down-tempo cover of ‘Everybody Wants to Rule the World’ turns the original from Tears for Fears on its head, playing up the haunting elements for an almost unrecognizable, sinister cover.

Powerful, yet restrained ballads by Christina Aguilera (We Remain), Imagine Dragons and their dramatic percussion (Who We Are) and The National (Lean) are sure to appeal to the younger crowd that the movie is targeted at.
http://youtu.be/qwbmEKG163A

Romance is a large part of the story, and Sia steals the show with ‘Elastic Heart’. It may not be the strongest track on the album, but with lyrics like “Love is a battlefield” make the song a great fit for the Hunger Games.

The soundtrack does feature a ragtag crew of Indie bands, but chart hits are far more prevalent than in the first film. The Catching Fire soundtrack does away with the rural feel inspired by the first film, keeping in line with the advances in Suzanne Collin’s dystopian tale.
