In loving memory of Joe Cocker, 1944 – 2014

By | Music

The beloved, Grammy Award-winning, blues-rock singer who created nearly 40 albums in a career spanning 6 decades passed away yesterday (December 22nd) from lung cancer at 70 years of age. We miss him already! His agent Barrie Marshall confirmed the news, saying that he was “simply unique” and that “it will be impossible to fill the space he leaves in our hearts. He was without doubt the greatest rock/soul voice ever to come out of Britain – and remained the same man throughout his life.”

Joe Cocker

John Robert Joe Cocker was born on May 20, 1944, in Sheffield, England where he lived until his early twenties. In 2007 he was awarded the OBE by the Queen of England. He gave his final live performance at London’s Eventim Apollo on May 13, 2013, following a tour in support of his 2012 album Fire It Up.

He is survived by his wife Pam Baker, who he married in 1987. They lived together on their ranch in Crawford, Colorado.

Here’s our Top 10 Joe Cocker songs:

(To open this playlist in C5, just tap here.)

1-With a Little Help From My Friends – Woodstock 1969
This is the song that Joe will always be remembered for. Cocker’s cover of this Beatles track went to No. 1 in the U.K., and then became his most memorable moment from a career-making performance at Woodstock the next year. Paul McCartney said “It’s really sad to hear about Joe’s passing. He was a lovely northern lad who I loved a lot and like many people I loved his singing. I was especially pleased when he decided to cover With A Little Help From My Friends and I remember him and Denny Cordell coming round to the studio in Saville Row and playing me what they’d recorded and it was just mind blowing. He totally turned the song into a soul anthem and I was forever grateful for him for doing that. I knew him through the years as a good mate and I was so sad to hear that he had been ill and really sad to hear today that he had passed away. He was a great guy, a lovely guy who brought so much to the world and we’ll all miss him,” McCartney concluded.

2-Feelin’ Alright
Cocker covered this Dave Mason original with Traffic and gives the song an endlessly funky vista. Cocker’s version hit the charts twice, first in 1969 and then again – finishing at a peak of No. 33 – in 1972.

3-The Letter – 1970 (Mad Dogs and Englishmen)
Cocker’s cover of the Box Tops’ No1 from 1967 rocks the song up, knocks the smooth edges off and mixes a bit of bluesy grit into this big, blaring arrangement. This was Joe’s highest-ever charting US single, until You Are So Beautiful raced to Nº5 five years later.

4-Delta Lady (Mad Dogs and Englishmen)
Delta Lady was written by Cocker’s future touring partner Leon Russell and was released on the subsequent Mad Dogs & Englishmen. It topped the charts in the UK at Nº10.

5-She Came In Through The Bathroom Window
Another Beatles cover which had just been released on the Abbey Road album but it had a lot less impact then With a Little Help From My Friends, and didn’t even chart in the UK. However, it was one of Cocker’s highest charting singles in the US at the time. It was taken from the album Joe Cocker! and released in 1969.

6-Don’t Let Me Be Misunderstood
Written by Bennie Benjamin, Gloria Caldwell, and Sol Marcus for the jazz singer/pianist Nina Simone, who first recorded it in 1964. Cocker’s version was taken form his 1969 debut album and played over the ending credits of the 2004 film Layer Cake. Future Wings guitarist Henry McCullough plays the closing guitar.

7-When the Night Comes
Taken from Cocker’s 12th studio album One Night of Sin (1989) this track has a sleek, modern sound and peaked at Nº11 on the Billboard hot 100 – it was his last US Top 40 hit.

8-You Are So Beautiful
This great song was first recorded by Billy Preston and is from Cocker’s album I Can’t Stand The Rain (1974). In Cocker’s hands this song is impossibly gorgeous. It was a slowed-down arrangement, courtesy of producer Jim Price, which just worked so well. Beginning in quiet contemplation the strings sweep in and just carry you away.

9-Up Where We Belong
This platinum-certfied, Grammy-Award winning hit duet with Jennifer Warnes was Nº1 in the US, and held the position for 3 consecutive weeks, plus Noº1 in Australia and Canada and a top 10 hit in the UK. It featured in the heart-melting climax of the hit movie An Officer and a Gentleman (1982). The song sold over two million copies in the US.

10-You Can Leave Your Hat On
Written by Randy Newman this song appears on Cocker’s 1986 album, Cocker. Released as a single it peaked at Nº35 on the Mainstream Rock Songs chart and was featured in the 1986 Adrian Lyne film 9½ Weeks during the striptease scene. A music video was also released with footage from the striptease scene plus scenes of Cocker and his band performing the song.

The Veronicas – If You Love Someone

By | Music Videos | No Comments

The Veronicas start a Love Revolution in their upbeat & inspiring If You Love Someone video. The uplifting video sees the twin sisters, Lisa and Jessica Origliasso, and a whole group of friends fight for a Love Revolution – putting flowers on police cars, sticking up inspiring messages and generally calling for real change. “Our love for music is only matched by our desire to ‘be the change’ and ‘find the voice’ to speak up, for ourselves, and the world around us,” the twins posted alongside the video premiere. “This video is merely meant to inspire a light within you, that we hope will one day spark into a fire to light the way for others. Because at the end of the day, there is no greater lesson to learn, than the grand lesson of LOVE, FREEDOM, ACCEPTANCE, COMPASSION, for ourselves, and for others.” Right on, girls! We’re with you!

(To watch this video in C5, just tap here.)

This catchy, socially conscious anthem is another world from their last chart-topping ballad You Ruin Me. It’s a great radio song and looks set to repeat the success of the last single. Both are taken from the Australian duo’s third self-titled album.

The overdue return of the Veronica’s after years of label limbo was musically, one of this year’s high points. They began recording their 3rd album in 2010 but the work was never finished due to a conflict with Warner Bros Records. They finally parted company with the label late in 2013 and announced that they would return to music after signing a new record deal with Sony Music in March this year.

“When we made the video for #IfYouLoveSomeone, it was important that we bought up issues that are worth discussing! The core thread of those msgs, revolve around integrity,” the Australian sisters wrote on their Twitter account. “To make a difference. Defend the planet. Defend human rights. Animal rights. Stand up to everyday corruption.”

“We want to inspire you guys to join us. Ask yourself what you believe in,” Lisa and Jess continued. “Ask what we can all do to make these changes in our own lives! This isn’t a backpack revolution where we slap on a few badges.. this is a call for real change. Change always starts with questions.”

Alex Adair – Make Me Feel Better

By | Music Videos | No Comments

Here is a true musical remedy – Alex Adair has premiered the music video for his debut single, Make Me Feel Better – and it undoubtedly WILL make you feel a lot better. Thank you Alex! Light & plucky synths, lively percussion and a truly inspiring visual with a great vibe. With millions of plays already on Soundcloud this is a producer to watch out for next year.

(To watch this video in Creation 5, just tap here.)

Alex Adair is a 21 year old producer from West Sussex in the UK. We don’t know an awful lot more about him except that he already has the backing of Annie Mac, Zane Lowe and MistaJam on Radio 1 and 1Xtra and has over 4 million plays on Soundcloud. He has also released remixes for Ed Sheeran, Jessie Ware and Ella Eyre online.

Make You Feel Better is the kind of track that makes you dream of gorgeous majestic spring days and hot dreamy summer nights. Sampling the legendary artists Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell, and their Ain’t Nothing Like The Real Thing single, Adair brings us a highly infectious exuberant track overflowing with energy and good vibes. The visual, directed by Dano Cern, matches the energy and vibe of the track perfectly.

The music video was produced by Artists And Derelicts – a new media collective that brings content to life for music videos, art films, commercials and advertising. The collective is helmed by executive producer Misssy Galandia who has produced award-winning videos for nearly every celebrity brand on the planet.

Make Me Feel Better is available to pre-order now.

Madonna – Living For Love

By | Music Videos | No Comments

In response to the leak of 13 unfinished demos last week Madonna has just released 6 new songs on iTunes, plus uploaded Living For Love onto Youtube, in advance of her just-announced full-length album, Rebel Heart. “I was hoping to release my new single Living For Love on Valentine’s Day with the rest of the album coming in the Spring,” the iconic singer stated on her official website early this morning (December 20). “I would prefer my fans to hear completed versions of some of the songs instead of the incomplete tracks that are circulating. Please consider these six songs as an early Christmas gift.”

(To play Living for love in creation 5, just tap here.)

iTunes was having problems this morning, probably due to the massive amount of traffic after Madonna’s surprise announcement. If you do have problems locating the tracks just go to Madonna’s ’Artist Page’ on the iTunes Store and sort her albums by release date and Rebel Heart should show up immediately. You can download the songs as part of an album pre-order or buy them individually, a la carte.

The album has 19 tracks, most of which are still untitled, save for one called Joan of Arc that is not yet available. More music will be released Feb. 9 before the full album arrives in full on March 10, 2015.

Tracks available include the following:
Living for Love (Madonna Ciccone, Thomas Wesley Pentz, Alicia Keys, MoZella, Ariel Rechtstaid, Toby Gad, Nick Rowe)
Devil Pray (Madonna Ciccone, Ryan Tedder)
Ghosttown (Madonna Ciccone)
Unapologetic Bitch (Madonna Ciccone,Thomas Wesley Pentz, Sophie)
Illuminati (Madonna Ciccone,Thomas Wesley Pentz)
Bitch I’m Madonna (feat. Nicki Minaj – Madonna Ciccone,Thomas Wesley Pentz, Sophie, Onika Minaj)

Producers on the tracks include Diplo, Kanye West, Billboard, Dahi, Blood Diamonds and Madonna, herself. Diplo — who produced a large portion of the album’s tracks — promised the songs would be “crazy-sounding.” “We really pushed the envelope with some of the stuff we were doing,” he said, adding Madonna was “up for anything.” “I love when an artist gives a producer the confidence he needs to work with them, and Madonna was very open-minded to my ideas… she was down from day one.”

Madonna has been troubled by leaks for the last few weeks. Earlier this month, she posted a photo of a smashed iPod on Instagram “This broken ipod is a symbol of my broken heart! That my music has been stolen and leaked! I have been violated as a human and an artist! #fuckedupshit.”

When she discovered unreleased photos from shoots had made their way onto the web, she posted one of the images on Instagram saying, “I am asking my true fans and supporters who respect me as an artist and a human to not get involved with the purchasing, trading or posting of unreleased images or music. I hope and pray we find the source of the leaks soon. Until then i am grateful for any leads or info and even more grateful for your support and loyalty! Please let me finish my work so i can give you my very best!”

The Pinkprint Movie

By | Music Videos | No Comments

Nicki Minaj just released an extended music video to accompany the release of her new album, The Prinkprint. The 16 minute Pinkprint Movie is comprised of 3 parts which all relate back to tracks on her album – Part 1: The Crying Game, Part 2: I lied and Part 3: Grand Piano – featuring the tracks The Crying Game, All Things Go, and Grand Piano. If there was ever any doubt that Nicki’s broken heart was at the core of the album, this video cements it. It’s an awesome visual that compliments the album perfectly and seeing as words will never do it justice you’ll have to watch it for yourself.

(To watch this mini movie in creation 5, just tap here.)

It might not be an adrenaline-fuelled action video or a sexy twerk fest, but we rather like this raw and emotional side of Minaj – it feels real, rather than commercial. It’s like we are seeing her life on screen, putting her heart on the line.

The comments on YouTube are amusing – most people seem amazed at seeing this tender side of Minaj, others, as you would expect, are disappointed that there are no wiggling butts. I guess that’s the price you pay for releasing a video like Anaconda.

The Trinidad and Tobago-born rapper has had a busy week, her third studio album was released on December 15, the news broke that she was the face of Roberto Cavalli Spring/Summer 2015 campaign – (tap here to read the story) and then yesterday (December 19) she uploaded this mini-movie to YouTube.

We like the The Pinkprint best out of all her albums, it’s raw and emotional and quite clear that she has put her blood, sweat and tears into it. There are 22 songs on the deluxe version and we didn’t skip one track. It has received generally positive reviews from music critics and is currently on track to debut inside the top 5 on Billboard 200 next week.

Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show 2014

By | Music

The super sexy Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show event brought an all-star cast of Angels including Candice Swanepoel, Doutzen Kroes, and Alessandra Ambrosio and Adriana Lima, who each sported a coveted Dream Angels Fantasy Bra worth $2 million. For the first time in the 19-year history of the event it took place in London and high-profile guests like Olivia Palermo, Ellie Goulding, and Kate Moss’s sister, Lottie, were given a black-tie dress code based on the event’s theme — Truman Capote’s famous Manhattan Black and White Ball in 1966.

VS-finale-1

It was the biggest show ever in the events history, taking place at the Earls Court exhibition centre and  some 3,400 guests watched the gorgeous Angels strut their stuff on the runway. The show was organised into 6 segments — Gilded Angels, Exotic Traveler, Dream Girl, Fairy Tale, University of Pink, and Angel Ball — and, as tradition has it, all the models congregated on the runway for a huge, balloon filled finale.

VS-wings-1

This year there were two Fantasy Bras worth 2 million dollars a piece and encrusted in diamonds, rubies, sapphires and 18k gold. They were modelled by Alessandra Ambrosio and Adriana Lima, who have been walking the show longest. Click here to read our feature on the Fantasy Bra.

The show was indeed an entertainment spectacle and it wasn’t just the models stunning bodies that kept the audience clapping and cheering throughout – it was also the elaborate, theatrical costumes in which they were clad and the combination of lights, effects and fantastic musical performances.

VS-vertical-4 VS-vertical-5 VS-vertical-6

Taylor Swift, Ariana Grande, Ed Sheeran and Hozier joined the models and sang as they twirled down the catwalk in huge feathery cloaks and jackets — like giant peacocks. Then there were the wings which looked like architectural masterpieces – some with feathers, some sculpted in gold, others iridescent just like Tinkerbell and others exotic dragonfly-shaped.

VS-vertical-A VS-vertical-B

Taylor Swift performed Blank Space and Style, Ed Sheeran performed Thinking Out Loud (and naturally, found it very difficult to concentrate), Ariana Grande performed Love Me Harder, Bang Bang, Break Free and Problem and Hozier performed Take Me to Church.

VS-taylor-1

“It’s supposed to be fun, and it’s perfectly appropriate to get off your rich English butts, stand up and enjoy the show,” said Ed Razek, president and chief marketing officer at Limited Brands (Victoria’s Secret’s parent).

VS-ariana-1

Backstage was almost as pretty as centre stage with all 47 models dressed in matching baby-pink satin robes. They spent the majority of the afternoon preparing for the show, although not an awful lot of make-up was used, leaving the girls’ natural good looks to shine. “You don’t book a whole set of gorgeous girls and then change them,” makeup artist Dick Page said. He likened the models to “a genetically gifted group of children.”

VS-vertical-7 VS-vertical-9 VS-vertical-10

Of course, nobody is perfect. “They’re teenagers some of them, so they do have the occasional breakout. We’re lucky in the sense that we’re not stuck in the middle of a whole batch of other shows, so they don’t have the stress of coming late from fittings or other shows, or running through London, and having their make-up taken on and off ten times a day. That’s what really breaks the skin down. They’re a bit more rested — apart from the fact that they all got flown in on the plane yesterday as a special delivery.” Page added.

VS-taylor-2 VS-taylor-3

All the glitter, gold and Angel dust did a lot of good with the event raising more than $2.5 million for charities through ticket sales. Many charities including the American Cancer Society, Pelotonia and Gabriel’s Angels, auctioned pairs of tickets for the show fetching prices in excess of $25,000.

Backstreet Boys:
Show ‘Em What You’re Made Of

By | Music Videos | No Comments

Backstreet’s back, all right! The Backstreet Boys documentary trailer Show ‘Em What You’re Made Of is here and it looks pretty great, certainly worth a download! “From 1999 to 2002 we were the biggest band in the world…and then it just stopped,” Backstreet Boys explain in the new trailer. The documentary explores the past 2 years in the band’s life and the recording and touring plans for their most recent album, In a World Like This. It also also looks back at their origins and how they became larger than life, plus the shadier aspects of the music industry giving their account of boy band mogul Lou Pearlman and his $300 million Ponzi scheme.

(To watch the trailer in creation 5, just tap here.)

Things get heated, emotional and dramatic. Nick, Brian, Kevin, A.J. and Howie finally spill the dirt on Lou Pearlman, the notorious con man who got the group together and ended up taking millions of their earnings.

“We’ve been filming during the making of the record, the rehearsals for the tour, while we’ve been out on the road,” Kevin Richardson told Billboard. “It’s kind of a making-of the record along with our story, how we got together and the ups and downs and the roller coaster that we’ve been on.”

“What do you when you’re a full-grown man in a boy band?”

Filmmaker Stephen Kijak lets the Boys tell their story of their heydey and fall from grace in their own words, and then follows them during their 2012 reunion as they record their big comeback album.

Backstreet Boys: Show ‘Em What You’re Made Of hits cinemas and iTunes on January 30, 2015.

Nicki Minaj for Roberto Cavalli

By | Music

Nicki Minaj is the new face of Roberto Cavalli for the Spring/Summer 2015 campaign – and she looks stunning! It seems that everyone is talking about hip hop’s current leading lady – turn on the radio or TV, pick up a magazine and there she is. The Italians seem to be the most obsessed though – she appeared on the cover of L’Uomo Vogue in October followed by an editorial shoot in this months Vogue Italia. Check out the images below.

The news broke yesterday (December 18) that Minaj is the face of the Roberto Cavalli Spring/Summer 2015 campaign. The campaign images were shot in LA by Italian photographer Francesco Carrozzini.

Minaj was the only woman to make it into the Forbes Hip-Hop Cash Kings 2014 list – earning an estimated $14 million this year – and now the 32-year old is cashing in on the high-fashion stakes. In addition to the ready-to-wear collection she is also endorsing the eyewear and accessory line.

Roberto Cavalli commented “I chose Nicki Minaj because she embodies the exuberant and modern femininity of the Cavalli woman. In recent years we have become accustomed to women castigated in clothes that hide their body shapes. With this campaign, I wanted to send a strong countertrend message. I wanted a sensual woman who is aware of her body – who is not afraid to show her curves. Instead, she makes them her strength.”

We agree with Cavalli – we can’t think of a better person to show off the brand’s bold designs. As I’m sure you’ll agree the the Trinidad and Tobago-born hip hop star looks absolutely vibrant in the campaign images and her confidence is defintely her best accessory.

Meghan Trainor – Lips Are Movin

By | Music Videos | No Comments

Had enough of All About that Bass? Try the insanely catchy Lips are Movin instead, Meghan Trainor’s latest single. It’s already racked up nearly 42 million views in just under a month! Meghan Trainor is back to prove that she is no one-hit-wonder. In fact, she is a new breed of pop star whose clothes stay firmly on. In All About That Bass she tackled body image, in this single she’s gunning for all those good for nothing, lying, cheating dirty dawgs! With its retro sound and handclaps Lips are Movin does sound similar to All About That Bass – she even mentions the song loads of times on the new track. The song is currently at Nº8 on the Billboard Hot 100 and rising, whilst All About That Bass has finally started its descent after 22 weeks on the chart and sits at Nº3

(To watch this video in Creation 5, just tap here.)

Lips are Movin follows the age-old tradition of bashing bad blokes in songs and Trainor doesn’t mess about with her words: “You can buy me diamond earrings and deny-ny-ny / But I smell her on your collar so goodbye bye-bye-bye / I know you’re lying cause your lips are movin’ / Tell me do you think I’m dumb?”

The video is actually quite unique, it’s the first-ever socially sourced video. “HP is bending the rules because they are tapping content creators to produce and style the content in their own way,” Vine star Robby Ayala told MTV News recently. “It’s been successful with their fans and they are amplifying that onto the music video scene and that’s a really cool thing to see.”

Meghan invited Vine, Instagram and YouTube stars like Kristin Ess, Lizzza, Olivia “Chachi” Gonzales to be the set designers, producers, choreographers and make-up artists. “When you use social influencers and match them with a mainstream artist like Meghan Trainor, you’re taking two worlds and colliding them into one,” Vine star Cody Johns said. “And creating something really awesome.”

Lips Are Movin is the 2nd single from the 20-year-old’s upcoming debut album Title and will be officially released on January 19. The album will be out January 26.
