R.I.P. Robin Williams

By | Music Videos | No Comments

Oscar-winning actor and beloved comedian Robin Williams died of a suspected suicide at his home in northern California last night at just 63 years of age. A forensic examination is scheduled for later to finally determine the cause of death.

Robin’s wife, Susan Schneider, led the tributes last night – “This morning, I lost my husband and my best friend, while the world lost one of its most beloved artists and beautiful human beings. I am utterly heartbroken. On behalf of Robin’s family, we are asking for privacy during our time of profound grief.”

President Obama made a statement last night: “Robin Williams was an airman, a doctor, a genie, a nanny, a president, a professor, a bangarang Peter Pan and everything in between. But he was one of a kind. He arrived in our lives as an alien – but he ended up touching every element of the human spirit.”

Robin left behind four finished films that will hit our cinemas over the next year. He reprised his role as Teddy Roosevelt in Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb and stars in the Christmas comedy Merry Friggn’ Christmas, due out this November. He had also appeared in the drama Boulevard and provided the voice of Dennis the Dog in Absolutely Anything, due out next year.

The whole of Hollywood, and it seems most of the world, is in mourning for this legendary actor and comedian who brought us so much laughter. It’s a very strange feeling when someone that you don’t know personally dies and yet you feel incredibly sad and touched. Tributes continue to pour in on Twitter and Social Media sites:

Comedian Eddie Izzard said: “Robin Williams has died and I am very sad. From every comedian here at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, we salute him & we say goodbye.”

Ellen DeGeneres: “I can’t believe the news about Robin Williams. He gave so much to so many people. I’m heartbroken.”

Jonathan Ross: “Robin Williams is gone. I loved him. Incredibly talented performer. Wonderfully sweet and generous person. Heartbreaking news. So sad.”

Kevin Spacey: “Robin Williams made the world laugh & think. I will remember & honor that. A great man, artist and friend. I will miss him beyond measure.”

#RIPRobinWilliams. You gave us so much! Thank you for all the laughter you brought us. We salute you Robin and say goodbye.

Upcoming Films You Must Not Miss

By | Featured, Films

With the extraordinary success of this year’s Oscar nominated and Oscar winning films such as The Wolf of Wall Street, Dallas Buyer’s Club, Gravity and 12 Years A Slave, we’ve already seen some great films reach the big screen and the bar is set sky high.

The upcoming films for the second half of 2014 are the ones that are to be considered for next year’s Academy Awards and Golden Globes, and it seems like we’re set for good ride of popcorn nights and surround sound. The trailers for 2014’s upcoming movies are captivating as hell!

We look at the top 10 most anticipated films to be released between August and December 2014.

Birdman

Birdman is a comedy-drama about a washed-up actor who once played an iconic superhero and who mounts a Broadway play in a bid to overcome his ego and family trouble, and to reclaim his past glory. The film, co-written, produced and directed by Alejandro Gonzáles Iñárritu, stars Michael Keaton, Emma Stone, Edward Norton, Andrea Riseborough, Zach Galifianakis, Naomi Watts, and Amy Ryan. It has been selected as the opening film of the 71st Venice Film Festival and as the closing night title for the 52nd New York Film Festival.

The film is scheduled for an October 17, 2014 release.

Interstellar

Interstellar is a sci-fi film co-written and directed by Christopher Nolan (“The Dark Knight Triology” and “Inception”). The film stars a stellar cast, including Academy Award and Golden Globe winners Mathew McConaughey, Anne Hathaway and Michael Caine, as well as Jessica Chastain, Bill Irwin and Ellen Burstyn.

Interstellar is about the discovery of a wormhole (which theoretically can connect widely separated regions of spacetime) and the brave task of explorers and scientists who embark on a voyage through it, transcending the limits of human space travel, with the goal of saving humanity. It is also a powerful story about family.

Interstellar is scheduled to be released in theatres worldwide between the 5th and 7th of November, 2014.

The Foxcatcher

The Foxcatcher is a biographical, psychological crime drama directed by Academy Award nominee Bennet Miller (“Capote” and “Moneyball”) and written by E.Max Frye and Dan Futterman (“Capote”). The film is based on the true story of Mark Schultz (Channing Tatum), an Olympic wrestler who’s relationship with his sponsor John du Pont (Steve Carell) led to tragic circumstances involving his Olympic rival brother, Dave Shultz (Mark Ruffalo). The film competed for the Palme d’Or in the main competition section at the 2014 Cannes Film Festival, where Miller won the award for Best Director.

The Hollywood Reporter described Carell’s performance as “career changing”, and Variety stated that Tatum’s performance was “easily the most emotionally complex performance of his career.” With extraordinary performances, gripping and emotional storytelling, “The Foxcatcher” is a heavyweight champion amongst the films to be released later on this year and is definitely a must-see for dedicated moviegoers.

The film is due to be released on November 14, 2014.

The Homesman

The Homesman is a western drama directed by Tommy Lee Jones and co-written with Wesley Oliver and Kieran Fitzgerald. The film is based on Glendon Swarthout’s novel and tells the tale of George Briggs (Tommy Lee Jones), a claim jumper and outlaw who agrees to help Mary Bee Cuddy (Hilary Swank) transport three insane women from Nebraska to Iowa in exchange for his life and freedom. The Homesman also stars Hailee Steinfeld, William Fichtner and Meryl Streep.

The film was selected to compete for the Palme d’Or in the main competition section at the 2014 Cannes Film Festival, where it premiered. It will have its release on November 7, 2014.

Fury

Fury, written and directed by David Ayer, is an American war film about World War II, set in April 1945 as the Allies make their final push into Europe. Army Sergeant Wardaddy (Brad Pitt) commands a five-man crew and a Sherman tank on a deadly mission behind enemy lines in a heroic attempt to strike at the heart of Nazi Germany. The film stars Brad Pitt, Shia LaBeouf, Logan Lerman, Jon Berthnal, Michael Peña, Jason Isaacs and Scott Eastwood.

Fury is set to be released on November 14, 2014

The Search

The Search is a French drama directed by Michel Hazanavicius (“The Artist”) and is inspired by Fred Zinnemann’s 1948 film of the same name. The Search stars Academy Award nominee and César Award winner Bérénice Bejo and four-time Oscar nominee and Golden Globe winner Annette Carol Bening. The film was selected to compete for the Palm d’Or in the main competition section at the 2014 Cannes Film Festival.

The Search is to be released in France on November 26, 2014.

Whiplash

Whiplash, written and directed by Damien Chaselle, is the story of a young musician who struggles to make it as a top jazz drummer. It stars Miles Teller, Melissa Benoist, Austin Stowell, Jayson Blair and Kavita Patil. The film took top honours at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival, winning the Grand Jury prize and the Audience Prize. The film opened the 2014 edition of the indie film festival in January and was quickly sold to Sony Classics. The film was also screened at the Directors’ Fortnight running alongside the 2014 Cannes Film Festival and is scheduled to be screened in the Special Presentation section of the 2014 Toronto International Film Festival in September.

Whiplash is to be released on October 10, 2014.

Lucy

Lucy, written and directed by legendary French director, writer and producer, Luc Bresson (“Léon: The Professional”), is an action-thriller starring Scarlett-Johansson and Morgan Freeman. In cinemas in the US since July 25th, the film has already grossed $100 million against a budget of $40 million. The film tracks a woman accidentally caught in a dark deal who turns the tables on her captors and transforms herself into a female action heroine and a merciless warrior that has evolved beyond human logic.

Lucy will be released in cinemas across Europe between the months of August and September 2014.

The Theory of Everything

The Theory of Everything is British biopic-drama based on the life of physicist Stephen Hawkin, starring Olivier Award and Tony Award winner, Eddie Redmayne, and Felicity Jones. The film portrays the relationship between Hawkin and his first wife, Jane Wilde, during their university years, courtship and Hawkin’s diagnosis with motor neurone disease, where he was told he had just two year to live. The film, directed by James Marsh (“Man On Wire” and “Shadow Dancer”), is scheduled to be screened in the Special Presentation section of the 2014 Toronto International Film Festival.

The Theory of Everything is to be released on November 7, 2014.

The Imitation Game

The Imitation Game is a historical drama about British mathematician, logician, cryptanalyst and computer scientist Alan Turing, who was a central figure in deciphering Nazi Germany’s Enigma code that helped the Allies win World War II and who was later criminally prosecuted for his homosexuality. Written by Graham Moore and directed by Norwegian film director, Moten Tyldum, the film will feature in the 2014 Toronto International Film Festival and will premiere in Europe at the BFI London Film Festival on October 8, 2014. Nico & Vinz – Am I Wrong

By | Music Videos | No Comments

It may have been a long time coming but yesterday Nico & Vinz scored their first Nº1 on the UK singles chart with their debut hit “Am I Wrong”.

The track zoomed 51 places to give Norway their first chart-topper in 28 years! The last time a Norweigan act held the Nº1 spot was in 1986 when A-ha scored their one and only chart topper with ‘The Sun Always Shines On TV’ which held on to the top spot for 4 weeks. Although other Norweigan acts such as Abba, A1 and Aqua have made it to Nº1, Nico & Vinz are the first since A-ha to be completely Norweigan.

Nico & Vinz told the Official Charts company: “Wow! Thanks to all our British fans for making Am I Wrong the Number 1 single!  Growing up in Oslo, we always dreamed of being at the top of the UK chart so for this now to be true is completely surreal. We are extremely grateful to you for making that happen and can’t wait to come and play it for you guys live very soon.”

Nico & Vinz started their musical career in 2009 when they were called ‘Envy’. They changed their names in January 2014 after the worldwide success of ‘Am I Wrong’. They created their music as a fusion of diverse genres from reggae to soul to pop.

The music video, directed and edited by Kavar Singh, was filmed in Maun, Botswana and Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe. The idea was to try and present a positive view of Africa to counteract all the negative news stories

In an interview with Good Morning America they were asked about the meaning of the song and the inspiration behind it: “Inspiration is coming from a small country, but having huge dreams and people telling you, man, that’s not realistic, come on, you can’t be on the top of America or the top of the world or whatever we dream of.”

‘Am I Wrong’ has reached the Nº1 spot in seven countries, including the US and the UK and the top 10 in over 20 countries. By the end of July 2014 the track was the most ’Shazammed’ song in the world and has been streamed more than 100 million times on Spotify.

Currently Nico & Vinz are touring the US with Bruno Mars and working on their upcoming album Blackstar Elephant which will be released this autumn.

Pentatonix – We are Ninjas

By | Music Videos | No Comments

Pentatonix, the coolest a capella group on the planet, have just released a very special video, inspired by the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie. The movie is a remake of the hugely popular 80s TV show, which in turn was based on the original comic book.

In the run up to the release of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie Pentatonix teamed up with Paramount pictures to produce this very cool video which celebrates Donatello, Leonardo, Raphael and Michelangelo. And Pizza.

The song is not very long, just over 1 minute 30 seconds, but in that time the group get through some complicated choreography, some great rapping and a very cool pizza appreciation moment. (You should probably order pizza before you watch the video.)

“The idea is we’re kind of riffing off the turtles,” said director Melissa Bolton-Klinger in a behind-the-scenes clip. “Dark alleyway scenes, kind of West Side Story meets ninjas.”

The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie opened in the US on August 8, the UK has to wait till October 17.

Chelsea Lankes – Secret

By | Music Videos | No Comments

She’s only 25 years old and comes from Nashville, one of the cities with most musical tradition in the United States. Chelsea Lankes, singer-songwriter, is a newcomer to the world of music who aims for the top when it comes to the quality and depth of her lyrics, accompanied by a delicious and relatable voice.

Her latest release, titled “Secret” is a wonderful and upbeat song, which is part of the unveiling of her debut album, scheduled for release next autumn.

The videoclip for “Secret” is an intimate setting, with the young artist trying to capture the levels of complicity and connection that develops between two people in love, without having to say a word – just letting themselves enjoy the silence. The scenes portray happiness and tranquillity, going hand in hand with the singer’s words “we touch and no need for speaking”. Quoting Chelsea’s interview from the Times magazine website, she adds, “It was really fun creating a world where these two characters could interact. You can see these two people in this raw state of their relationship.”

While both her professional and personal life revolves around Los Angeles, Chelsea returned to her native Nashville to record this video. Her idea being to find inspiration and recreate a typical Southern motel, a setting that she’d envisioned for this story from the very beginning.

Her first major hit online was the song “Ghost”, released in late 2013, achieving fantastic reception on SoundCloud and YouTube. “Secret” is directed by the famous filmmaker Chuck David Willis, exquisitely combining scenes to go together with Chelsea Lankes’ delicate voice and the accompanying synthesizers and guitar. Although there is a light sense of sex floating in the air and we do catch glimpses of semi-naked bodies, the resulting video is far from being explicit – which has become very common in works of this genre.

Chelsea Lankes is one of the best-kept secrets in pop music and her catchy, upbeat song “Secret” invites us to dream and expect great things from this young artist.

The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies

By | Music Videos | No Comments

Director Peter Jackson is back, teasing us with the launch of the first trailer for The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies. After witnessing the little Bilbo Baggins face off with the mighty and fearsome dragon Smaug, as well as snatching the famous ring of power from the sinister, yet haunted Gollum, Bilbo still has to fight fiercely to get back home to his beloved and peaceful Shire.

New images of the third installment of The Hobbit were presented in the latest Comic-Con convention in San Diego, the world’s epicenter of all things sci-fi and fantasy.

“One day, I’ll remember. Remember everything that happened. The good, the bad. Those who survived – and those that did not.” The trailer begins with these sad words, marking the mood for the film that will conclude the second trilogy from the universe created by J.R.R. Tolkien and painted on film by Peter Jackson. Fans of the series can look forward to an even greater dose of battles and action than in the previous two installments.

Once again, we will be following our favorite main heroes – the adventurous little hobbit Bilbo Baggins (Martin Freeman), the wise wizard Gandalf the Grey (Ian McKellen) and the mountain dwarves led by the fearless Thorin Oakenshield (Richard Armitage). Thorin certainly created unbelievable tension when he openly declared his lust for battle, with his chilling response “I will have war” and later adding the key phrase that intrigues and leaves us all wanting more “Will you follow me, one last time?”

The teaser allowed us to catch a glimpse of the big showdown that will take place on the edge of Erebor, the Lonely Mountan. A grand battle with the dark forest elves, dwarves, humans and great Eagles of Esgaroth against the menacing goblins and orcs.

Frist there was The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey (2012), followed by the magnificent The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug (2013) and on the 17th of December of this year, the trilogy inspired by the Lord of the Rings, shall come to an end with the release of The Battle of the Five Armies.

In Performance at the White House is a series of concerts produced by WETA (a non-commercial TV channel located in Washington DC) since 1978 and spans every administration since President Carter’s. Created to showcase the rich fabric of American culture in the exclusive setting of the nation’s most famous home.

It all started with a piano recital by the legendary pianist Vladimir Horowitz and since that first concert the series has celebrated more or less every genre of American musical performance. Over the last 36 years concerts have honoured the genius of musical legends such as Sir Paul McCartney, Stevie Wonder, Burt Bacharach and Hal David. Celebrated the rich roots of America’s Country music, Motown and the Blues, music from the Civil Rights Movement, Hispanic musical heritage and the unique spirit of Broadway and the American musical.
