Tyler, The Creator – Fucking Young

By | Music, Music Videos | No Comments

The Odd Future rapper has shared a video from two songs off his upcoming album Cherry Bomb which will be released this coming Monday (April 13). Tyler directed the video himself under his Wolf Haley moniker and it’s pretty impressive. Fucking Young, as well as being funny and silly, is a colourful and creative affair with some great photography. The six-and-a-half-minute long narrative tells the story of the breakdown of a relationship between Tyler and a girl who is far too young for him.

The new album Cherry Bomb features collaborations with Kanye West, Lil Wayne, Charlie Wilson, Chaz Bundick (aka Toro y Moi) and the Black Lips’ Cole Alexander. In a string of recent tweets Tyler has stated that he wants the album to go to Nº1. “TELL EVERYONE. IT DOESNT MATTER MUCH BUT I DO WANT A NUMBER 1 ALBUM JUST TO GO BACK TO THE N****S WHO SAID I WOULDNT,” he wrote on April 9. His last album Wolf (2013) peaked at Nº3 on the Billboard album charts and Nº 17 on the UK charts.

Tyler is currently on a US tour taking in dozens of cities in North America, as well as 2 performances at the Coachella music festival, the House of Bllues in New Orleans and Irving Plaza in New York. The European leg of his tour kicks off in the UK on May 12 in Scotland. Visit Tyler’s website for more information.

OMI – Cheerleader (Felix Jaehn Remix)

By | Music, Music Videos | No Comments

The hottest song of the moment – the one that’s impossible to listen to without a smile on your face – has just got a brand new music video ahead of its official UK release on Simon Cowell’s Syco label. Jamaica-born OMI has already hit Nº 1 in 10 countries with the feel-good, reggae-infused track, and last week entered the UK Top 40 at Nº 37 on streams alone.

Cheerleader (Felix Jaehn Remix) is already among the top 10 most-streamed tracks globally, breaking the all-time streaming record in France with 1.3 million streams in a single week! The song has gained more than 100 million total Spotify streams, has reached Nº1 on Spotify in nine markets, and has seen combined YouTube views of more than 40 million. The track was also named one of ’16 Tracks You Need in Your Life Right Now’ by THE FADER.

OMI comes from the rural Jamaican parish of Clarendon. He met his music mentor and producer – Clifton ‘Specialist’ Dillon – in 2009 and set up his own music studio in Kingston.

Madonna – Ghosttown

By | Music, Music Videos | No Comments

Madonna has released a stunning music video for her latest single Ghosttown. Jonas Akerlund, has once again, directed a Madonna masterpiece. The cinematic visual sees Madonna in a post-apocalyptic world surrounded by scenes of devastation and destruction. She eventually meets up with another survivor, Empire’s Terence Howard, better known as Lucius Lyon. They fall in love and although they don’t quite “wander off into the sunset”, it’s the post-apocalyptic equivalent.

Ghosttown is the second single from Madonna’s Rebel Heart album which was released last month and was stopped from hitting Nº1 on the Billboard album charts by, yep, you guessed it… the soundtrack to the first season of Empire!

We’re glad to see that despite her recent stage mishap Madonna is still wearing her beloved capes. We love her look in this video, very Stevie Nicks.

Last December hackers leaked unfinished songs from Rebel Heart – an act that Madonna called ‘artistic rape’ on Instagram. Due to this theft Madonna has taken a multi-platform approach to releasing this video and promoting her album. She used Snapchat, Instagram and Grindr for promotion and premiered the Ghosttown video on the broadcasting app Meerkat. A behind-the-scenes companion to the Ghosttown music video is available on Tidal.

Lip Sync Battle, the TV hit of the season

By | Featured, Music

Lip Sync Battle is the TV hit of the season! It’s become a huge viral sensation. Why? Basically, because it’s so silly and so much fun, and as it’s co-host JJ Cool says “I love the idea because it’s a new way to celebrate music on TV.”

The celebrity fake-singing sensation is a spin off of the hugely popular Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon. Fallon first pitched the show to NBC for network broadcast, but they turned it down! They must be cursing that decision right now! An NBC insider told the Hollywood Reporter that the feeling at NBC was like “We’re not just going to buy everything Jimmy brings us.”

Fallon took on The Rock in the shows debut with Dwayne performing Taylor Swift’s Shake it Off and Fallon starting a conga line to Harry Belfonte’s Jump in the Line. The end-of-show audience applause test saw The Rock beating Fallon. That first premiere was watched by more than 2.2 million people making it the most watched debut for a non-scripted series in the nework’s history.

Another of our favourite battles – Anne Hathaway vs Emily Blunt – airs tonight and the YouTube teaser has already racked up more than 9 million views. Hathaway’s performance has had everyone talking because it was so good! She literally channels Miley Cyrus, the moves, the looks everything! Apparently when the cameras shut off, everyone backstage was going nuts because she really went for it! Emily Blunt prepares to take on the challenge with her epic version of Janis Joplin. Tune in tonight for the full show! (We’ve added the pre-show clip to our video list.)

Lip Sync Battle airs Thursdays at 10 p.m. on Spike TV.

Abba – Dancing Queen

By | Music | No Comments

#ThrowbackThursday. Today we go back to 1977 when Abba scored their 1st Nº1 in the US with Dancing Queen. It was also Nº1 in the UK and 12 other countries – the most successful single of the 70s.

It’s success has continued unabated over the years. In 2000 it came 4th in a Channel 4 television poll of The 1oo Best Number Ones. It ranked Nº174 on Rolling Stone’s list of The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time – the only Abba song on the list. In 2002, 188,357 radio listeners in the UK voted for The Top 50 Favourite UK Nº1s and Dancing Queen came in at Nº8. Just last year the musical instrument insurer Musicguard carried out a survey determining Dancing Queen to be the UKs favourite “floorfiller”.

Benny Andersson has cited it as “one of those songs where you know during the sessions that it’s going to be a smash hit”. Agnetha Fältskog also stated on TV: “It’s often difficult to know what will be a hit. The exception was ‘Dancing Queen’. We all knew it was going to be massive”.

Tinashe – All Hands On Deck

By | Music, Music Videos | No Comments

Tinashe shows off some serious high energy dance moves in the new video for her stellar track All Hands On Deck. Directed by Ben More the video was shot with a handful of backing dancers in a shipping yard. The photography is excellent, the setting very creative and the dancing sublime. It looks like Tinashe will continue her reign at the top of everyone’s R&B playlists.

The track is a Crunk&B song – a genre of hip hop music that originated in Memphis, Tennessee – with elements of West Coast hip hop, grime and late 1990s / early 2000s R&B. The thick bassline, club-friendly beat and pan-flute breakdown are complimented by Tinashe’s super-smooth vocals. She sings about a guy who broke her heart but now she’s glad to be free: “Kiss the old me goodbye, she’s dead and gone, dead and gone, dead and gone.”

In a recent interview with Billboard Magazine Tinashe talked about the filming of the video: “I feel like when you put yourself in a borderline dangerous situation, exciting things can happen. That shock value is always what you want to go for in a memorable video. We were over 100 feet in the air with no safety harnesses. Literally, we could have died. It was a thrill to make and I’m so excited for my fans to see this video. We really stepped it up, visually.”

All Hands on Deck is taken from Tinashe’s debut studio album Aquarius (2014).

American Oxygen – Rihanna

By | Music, Music Videos | No Comments

Rihanna debuted her latest single American Oxygen at the NCAA March Madness Music Festival (a free three-day outdoor music festival in celebration of the NCAA Men’s Final Four in downtown Indianapolis.). During her performance she protested the state’s Religious Freedom Restoration Act. “Who’s feeling these new bullshit laws that they’re trying to pass over here? I say, ‘Fuck that shit,'” Rihanna told the crowd, “We’re just living our motherfucking lives.” After the festival performance she then dropped the official music video on the new streaming service TIDAL – which she co-owns along with a dozen or so music megastars.

The visual could be considered patriotic as Rihanna performs alone in front of the American flag, yet the visuals that flash in between Rihanna singing don’t make you feel good about America at all. The powerful images from America’s turbulent history include clips of Martin Luther King during his famous speech and his funeral procession, the 1969 Moon Landing, the Black Power salute at the 1968 Summer Olympics and 9/11. There are plenty of protest clips from Occupy Wall Street and the protests in Ferguson, Missouri to the UC Davis pepper-spraying incident and civil rights marches.

With American Oxygen Rihanna is showing a social and political consciousness that we haven’t really seen before from most of her past discography. The single is taken from her upcoming 8th studio album, following FourFiveSeconds and Bitch Better Have My Money.

Morrissey – Kiss Me A Lot

By | Music, Music Videos | No Comments

Morrissey’s new music video for Kiss Me A Lot takes a very different tack than the visuals we are used to seeing from him. Directed by fashion photographer Sam Esty Rayner the video was premiered via Morrissey’s True to You zine. It features the cantankerous singer performing with his live band interspersed with shots of scantily clad women with the song title written over their bodies in red lipstick. It’s funny but it seems like the video ends up treating women like meat – which is a bit ironic really, isn’t it Moz? Or maybe that’s the whole point.

Morrissey has had a bit of a bad run recently. Two of his previous North American tours were cancelled due to illness and last October he revealed that he has undergone a series of treatments for cancer. “They have scraped cancerous tissues four times already, but whatever,” he told Spanish-language newspaper El Mundo. “If I die, then I die. And if I don’t, then I don’t. Right now I feel good. I am aware that in some of my recent photos I look somewhat unhealthy, but that’s what illness can do. I’m not going to worry about that. I’ll rest when I’m dead.”

Kiss Me a Lot is the 5th cut from Morrissey’s 10th solo studio album, World Peace Is None of Your Business (2014). The album did really well on the charts peaking at Nº2 in the UK and Nº14 in the US when it was released last summer.

Below is a poster for the singer’s upcoming Madison Square Garden show with Blondie — part of a larger tour of the US that starts on June 11 in New Orleans.

Furious 7 – See You Again
Wiz Khalifa (ft. Charlie Puth)

By | Films, Music, Music Videos | No Comments

Furious 7 opened in cinemas worldwide on April 3 and scored the fourth highest opening weekend of all time. Fans who went to the cinema heard See You Again when it played over a Paul Walker montage at the end of the film. The late actor tragically passed away in a car crash in November 2013 when he was just 40 years old.

After the blockbuster debut weekend, Vin Diesel decided that the only way to top the tribute at the film’s end was to share the video. He posted the video on Facebook with the words: Pablo, this weekend you turned the world into a family… Thanks for the love…

Just like the movie, the music video is also dedicated to Walker and the Facebook post featured a link where fans could donate to Walker’s Reach Out Worldwide charity – a charity thats provides critical help to those in crises. You can donate here.

The music video, taken from the film’s soundtrack honours Walker’s legacy as Brian O’Conner, showing footage over the last 14 years, from the most recent edition of the film and the six others as well. Charlie Puth, who sings on the track, shared the video with a tweet saying: “7 million hits in 2 hours. i know you are watching down on all of us paul, the whole world is thinking of you.”

Nick Jonas – Chains (The Wynwood Walls Edition)

By | Music, Music Videos | No Comments

Nick Jonas is in chains yet again – this time for The Wynwood Walls Edition of his chart topping hit Chains. The video was released on March 31 – exactly eight months after the first version in July last year. Directed by Black Coffee and artist Peter Tunney the video was filmed at Miami’s famous Wynwood Walls.

There is no official word from Jonas as to why he decided to release two videos – perhaps he’s just giving his solo album’s lead single another shot. The first video was quite dark and gritty, this one is full of colour and is more like a street party than a serious, grown-up video. Nick cruises around in a light-up rickshaw, smokes cigars, parties with scantily clad girls and even crowd surfs. It’s a completely different vibe than the first video.
