Great New Sounds for 2015

By | Featured, Music

As we glide into the new year (hopefully leaving behind the tacky trail of mainstream songs and music videos which have been largely about big butts and twerking them) we can start to celebrate the great new sounds that some truly talented song writers and, quite frankly, underrated artists have created. Watch out for these guys in 2015!

Great New Sounds for 2015 – Tap on a video title to open it in Creation 5. If you want to grab all these songs as a whole playlist – you’ll find it at the bottom of the post.

George The Poet

George-the-poet-Creation5-1

A runner up in the Brit Awards for Critic’s Choice Awards 2015, George The Poet is a North West Londoner climbing the fame ladder. He always makes a point to send a strong positive message to his listeners. These are the kind of hip-hop artists we want the youth to be listening to. He’s studied politics at cambridge while pursuing the most important thing he can do; performing his poetry. Oh, and his smile is to die for!

Rolling Stone (The Weeknd Cover) – George The Poet & JP Cooper // Mahogany Session

Years & Years

Years-Years-Creation5-2

Genre: electronica. A three-man show, also from London, also shortlisted for the 2015 BRIT Awards – Critics Choice Award. The trio consists of keyboardist Olly, bassist Mikey and synth player Emre. What’s so great about them you ask? Just check them out:

Years & Years – Desire

Years & Years – Take Shelter

James Bay

james-bay-Creation5-2

The one who beat George The Poet and Years & Years to the first award of the season. Just a 23 year old from Hertfordshire with raw talent, an intriguing ‘chiselled by angels’ look, and a knees-weakening husky voice. How’s that for contrast? Oh, and he’s majorly skilled with his hands. (Guitar… what did you think?)

Hold Back The River – James Bay

Let It Go (Burberry Acoustic) – James Bay

Until The Ribbon Breaks

UntilTheRibbonBreaks2

Until The Ribbon Breaks (awesome name isn’t it?) is another British trio that might not have as much recognition as Years & Years, but their music is like a fine wine you never knew could taste so good. The band consisting of Peter, Elliot and James just recently produced a goose-bump inducing cover of Blondie’s hit song One Way Or Another. The cover was featured on one of the latest episodes of Stalker, CBS’ new chilling series. We just have a feeling about this band.

Until The Ribbon Breaks – One Way Or Another (Blondie Cover)

Until The Ribbon Breaks – Goldfish

Kat Dahlia

katdahlia-Creation5-1 katdahlia-Creation5-2 katdahlia-Creation5-3

You say you a gangsta, that don’t impress me none – are the famous lyrics off her first single, appropriately titled Gangsta. This fierce rapper with cuban roots is all about the passion in life and she expresses that through her music (which she writes herself.) What we find intriguing is the fusion of her seemingly mainstream beats with these razor sharp lyrics and unique aggressive flow. Her album My Garden has it’s release date set for January 13 of 2015. She absolutely classifies as an up-and-coming in our books. A lot of people say she sounds like Miley Cyrus. Well, all press is good press right?

Kat Dahlia – Crazy

Kat Dahlia – Mirror

Buck 65

Buck_65

If you don’t know who Buck 65 is, we are so glad to be the introducer. Deep, intelligent and rough is one way to describe his music. More like a diamond in the rough that you never want cutting or polishing because it’s flawless as it is. In his most recent release Super Pretty Naughty he takes a stab at the mainstream mayhem of the music industry in this day and age. We found it hilarious and actually really good. There seems to be so much that needs explaining about him, but it’s always best to let the music do that for itself.

Buck 65 – Super Pretty Naughty

Buck 65 – Phil

Fink

FINK-Creation5 FINK-Creation5-2

Fink, aka Fin Greenall, is a singer/songwriter/producer. Earlier on in his career he worked with a 17 years young Amy Winehouse of all people, and that’s a fond memory he carries with him to this day. He dabbles in the genres of blues, dub, folk and indie. Indie is where we found him, and where we fell in love. His song Looking Too Closely was competing for Song of The Year 2014 and blew up when it was featured in an episode of USAs Network hit series Suits. He will be touring globally throughout 2015 and hopefully showcasing new material. Watch his space.

Fink – Looking Too Closely

Fink – Shakespeare

Highasakite

highasakite

This jazz-trained group of folk from Norway came together after their musical studies and formed one of the best groups in todays ‘underground’ indie scene. The fab five consisting of two gals, Ingrid and Marte, and three guys, Kristoffer, Øystein and Trond, recently have been nominated for 3 Norwegian Grammy Awards and have already had their album Silent Treatment named Album of the Year as well as their song Leaving No Traces named Song of the Year in Norway. They’ve undoubtedly been causing waves in the industry since their latest album release and we only see them moving on up from here. We had the pleasure of interviewing them for one of our Sunday Sessions earlier this winter. Check it out here.

Leaving No Traces

Since Last Wednesday

Kendrick Lamar

Not much has to be said about this artist. He’s not exactly a rising star, already being at the top and all and he shouldn’t really be in this list. We just had to have his new song i on our New Sounds for 2015 playlist though. This refreshing, uplifting and brutally honest track is one that will shape hip-hop and rap throughout 2015. Touching on some real trials and tribulations, it keeps a beautiful message throughout. Let’s all make a new years resolution to love ourselves. Time to get your dancing shoes on!

2014 Booty Review

By | Music

2014 was, without a doubt, The Year of the Butt. During 2014 the derrière was celebrated and exploited. It was quite offensive at times and revolutionary at others. Most of the time though we were subjected to more butts than brains. Pop music was obsessed with booty in 2014 – but whose booty was the best?

We review the Year of the Butt and present here our top bootylicious music videos – in order of booty magnificence.

( Just tap any title to watch the video in Creation 5)

1 – Nicki Minaj – Anaconda

An incredible 352,395,870 people have viewed this video since its release on 19 August, 2014. When the cover art for the single was released the world was shocked – but no one knew what was in store for them when the music video came out a few weeks later. It made the cover artwork look like the Disney Channel. Gyrating butt cheeks, small stringy thongs – basically borderline pornographic.

Lyrical Highlights: “My anaconda don’t want none unless you got buns, hun” / “Oh my gosh, look at her butt” / “I got a big fat ass (ass, ass, ass)”

2- Mastodon – The Motherload

Anaconda is the only rival for this butt-tastic visual. There is a staggering amount of butt shaking and close up twerking shots. It’s insane. So. Many. Butts.

Lyrical Highlights: “I can put it right there in your hands”

3- Jennifer Lopez – Booty ft. Iggy Azalea

This bootylicious video is a strong contender for the top honours as it has not one, but two delicious butts! Jennifer Lopez and Iggy Azalea go cheek-to-cheek in this steamy visual. It’s even named Booty for goodness sake! Perhaps it’s a little too much and falls into the ‘more butt than brains’ category..?

Lyrical Highlights: “Throw up your hands if you love a big booty”

4-Beyoncé – Partition

With her classy cheeks on full display Queen B showed us that even music royalty should feel no shame about exposing their derrières – if they’re hot enough, of course. The Sexiest Woman Alive delighted millions who watched her perform this song during her On the Run Tour this summer.

Lyrical Highlight: “Ya man ain’t never seen a booty like this”

5-Jason Derulo – “Wiggle” feat. Snoop Dogg

Jason Derulo begged butts worldwide to do some serious wiggling. Since the videos release, 7 months ago, this butt-filled video has notched up over 429 million views. It has also earned the dubious honour of being one of the Top 5 songs in America this year. A fact that is both spectacular and scary at the same time.

Lyrical Highlight: “You know what to do with that big fat butt”

6-Shakira – Can’t Remember to Forget You ft. Rihanna

Released at the beginning of 2014, this video started the year off in the way it was to continue. With over 455 million views and causing a scandal on release this is one of our favourite booty fests. And who can choose between Shakira and Rihanna’s butt? Impossible. Best thing to do is to have both, right?

Lyrical Highlight: “I go back again /Fall off the train /Land in his bed”

7-Basement Jaxx – Never Say Never ft. ETML

Is it possible to make a bionic butt? Maybe it is, but can it twerk and wiggle in the right way? Does it move in a realistic way when you slap it? Basement Jaxx get scientific and spend a lot of time starring at real and bionic butts in this conceptually brilliant visual.

Lyrical Highlights: “Like a vision of love / You came, you stood / You blew right through me”

8-Meghan Trainor – All About That Bass

While Meghan might not have revealed her butt like everyone else on this list she is bringing booty back, that’s for sure. Trainor created a new kind of booty-self-confidence with her mega-hit. Released in June, it has over 443 million views on YouTube.

Lyrical Highlights: “I’m bringing booty back/Go ahead and tell them skinny b*tches that”

9-Taylor Swift – Shake It Off

Last on our list is Taylor Swift with her magnificent video for the sensational hit of 2014. Like Meghan Trainor, Taylor doesn’t actually expose her derrière but she certainly shakes it enough! Plus, she crawls through a tunnel of twerking butts, so we consider that it’s only fair she has a place on this list. Bouncing booty is just one of the many trends that Miss Swift must navigate.

Lyrical Highlight: “Baby, I’m just gonna shake, shake, shake, shake, shake”

The Battle of the Booty 2014

Billboard actually hit the streets to find out what people think in The Battle of the Booty 2014. Watch the video below to see what they found.

Happy Birthday Ellie Goulding!

By | Music

Happy Birthday to Elena Jane “Ellie” Goulding (born 30 December 1986). Ellie Goulding is not only a talented singer and songwriter she is also a multi instrumentalist playing drums, guitar and clarinet. She learnt to play the clarinet when she was 9 years old and taught herself guitar at 14 – she said she only learnt to impress a boy! She started songwriting at the age of 15 and while in college she entered a singing competition and won.

ellie-V1 ellie-V3 ellie-V4

Her career started in earnest when she met record producer Starsmith and Frankmusik, and talent scout Jamie Lillywhite, who later became her manager and A&R. Ellie signed to Polydor Records in July 2009 releasing an extended play titled An Introduction to Ellie Goulding. She then went on to become the BBC Sound of 2010 and won the Critics Choice at the Brit Awards in the same year.

ellie-Header

2010 was a big year for Ellie – she also released her debut studio album, Lights, and it debuted at Nº1 on the UK Albums Chart and has sold over 850,000 copies in the UK. Her cover of Elton John’s Your Song reached Nº2 in the UK in December 2010 and in April of the next year she performed the song at the wedding reception of Prince William and Catherine Middleton at Buckingham Palace. The album’s title track, Lights, was released in the US in March 2011, and peaked at Nº2 on the Billboard Hot 100 and was certified triple platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America. The rest, as they say, is history and Ellie has gone from strength to strength even performing at Prince Harry’s 30th birthday party.

ellie-V6 ellie-V7 ellie-V10

Ellie’s distinctive voice, with it’s high piercing vibrato, breathy tone and emotive delivery, is really something special. In an album review for Halcyon, Neil McComick of The Daily Telegraph said: “Her tremulous vibrato and slightly hoarse timbre have the feel of something primal and folky, her birdlike high notes conveying a childlike wonder while darker tones imply ancient depths of sorrow. She sings like she is strung out on the melody, warbling from a place of desperate emotion. It really is that rarest and perhaps most accidental of gifts: an original voice”.

ellie-H4

Ellie described her voice in an interview with Carson Daily: “I think sometimes it sounds like my voice is like, out of control… I have to really control it because it just kind of goes everywhere. Like, sometimes stuff comes out that I don’t expect. A lot, actually […]. It’s so funny because my favorite thing to do is imitate opera singers, but I’ve never had a singing lesson. Oh, I had a lesson just to teach me how to breathe better, but I never really had a singing lesson.”

ellie-V11 ellie-V8 ellie-V12

Ellie is a vegetarian and a keen runner and enjoys boxing, yoga and gymnastics. In the NY Post Ellie explains that she hasn’t always been into fitness: “When I was a teenager, I smoke and drank a lot — I was a chubby Goth! I was also really into music and, to me, music and sport didn’t really go together. You were either into one or the other. But now I devote my time to both and I’ve figured out how to make the two complement each other.”

ellie-H5

Ellie does have a dark side though and battled with this at the beginning of her career. Just when things were taking off for her she struggled with panic attacks, heart palpitations and dark, morbid thoughts. In a feature in the Telegraph she revealed that a therapist suggested the attacks were caused by the pressure of her reinventing herself. “There’s another girl who was meant to go down the bad route: dead-end jobs, drugs, being gobby, not giving a f—. And that’s my dark side, I suppose, and I have to accept it will never fully leave me.”

Viktoria Modesta – Prototype

By | Music Videos | No Comments

Forget what you know about disability. Meet the world’s first amputee pop star, Viktoria Modesta – she’s amazing! Her latest single Prototype has a mesmerizing new music video which was debuted by the UK’s Channel 4 as an advertisement for the channel. The ad only aired for a short time, but it was enough for the world to sit up and take notice and look to the singer as a future star. Like the music or not, the whole presentation is stunning and unlike anything we’ve ever seen in pop music.

(To watch this video in Creation 5, just tap here.)

Modesta dances like any other artist, exposes body parts like other artists and artistically simulates sex in this risqué music video. In the bedroom scene, the most shocking part is the number of participants, not her amputated limb. This sexy and talented 26-year old Latvian singer challenges our preconceptions of disability and sexuality.

Due to the negligence of doctors when she was born her left leg was damaged at birth and never grew properly. This led to 15 operations between the ages of 6 and 12 in an attempt to improve it’s growth. Modesta elected to remove the leg in order to improve her quality of life. Now, 6 years later, she is singing about the transformation and the freedom it has given her and the fact that she is the model of the future: “Assemble me, piece by piece/ Strip away the incomplete, the model of the future/ Colliding minds, it’s just a start/ Feel the sparks, we’re building art/ It’s the vertigo of freedom.”

modesta-V1 modesta-V2 modesta-V3

“My attitude towards myself is as an equal individual to any other human, no matter how superior they might like to portray themselves and this has been the key focus in my life, the feeling of equality and freedom. It’s just a kind attitude to have towards others, and it is also a liberating element of self-discovery. Since the voluntary amputation of my damaged leg I have been able to lead a fully functioning life not just creatively but also physically.”

Asked if she sees herself as a role model for those with similar problems, Modesta said “I don’t see myself as a role model for people with prosthetics or disabilities, although I am happy if they find what I do helpful or encouraging. I would really like to think that what I represent is a free spirit, someone who follows their ambitions outside of preconceptions and creates their own life script.”

The word disabled is not something that Modesta relates to: “I prefer seeing it as a health problem. The word disabled lost its meaning for me a long time ago and I find it too broad in scope and inaccurate. We are no longer living in the forests and jungles where a person with a physical body issue cannot reach their highest potential as a human being through other achievements, and physical ability or strength have nothing to do with that in my opinion. If we talk about intelligence ̶ which is something that’s leading the modern world ̶ then the term disability and who it may apply to is very much turned on its head. I believe if anyone is going to label people disabled, then their overall capabilities should be considered.”

modesta-V4 modesta-V5 modesta-V6

Modesta is crafting an alternative type of pop music which you could compare to Lady Gaga. She is inspired by electronic pop, American hip-hop and “melodramatic Russian music”. When she first came to London she went through a lot of musical scenes – Metal, Trance, Garage, Swing and Electro. “I’d say my music palette is very broad, I can appreciate almost any kind of music but when I’m in the studio it usually ends up Bass Pop with some epic synths or strings.”

Dragon Blade trailer

By | Music Videos | No Comments

Watch Jackie Chan, John Cusack and Adrien Brody in the new Dragon Blade trailer. Written and directed by Daniel Lee, Dragon Blade is set in 206-220 A.D. and focuses on a battle between Rome and China’s Han Dynasty. Jackie Chan plays Huo An, a commander with a 1,000-soldier army who teams up with a Roman general named Lucius (John Cusack) to try and protect the borders of China from external invaders. Unfortunately, the blood-thirsty Tiberius (Adrien Brody) has a score to settle with Lucius, and heads his way with an army of 100,000.

(To watch the trailer in creation 5, just tap here.)

This movie is reportedly the most expensive Chinese movie ever made, costing 65 million dollars to produce. Chan, Cusack and Brody have all experienced high levels of box office success – so what happens when all three come together to make a movie? Well, if the viral success of the trailer is anything to go by it could be huge – although it could equally be a huge, expensive flop.

The film is backed by Sparkle Roll Cultural Media, Huayi Brothers Media Corporation, Shanghai Film Group and new film investment group Beijing Cultural Assets Chinese Film & Television Fund. World sales are handled by Hong Kong-based Golden Network.

Dragon Blade is set for release in IMAX 3D on 19 February 2015, the first day of the Chinese New Year holiday period.
