Officially, this is the happiest day of the year! Who better to mark the occasion than writer of hit song Happy, Pharrell Williams. The International Day of Happiness (March 20) is led by the United Nations and Live Earth. The aim is to reach out to young people and engage them on climate change.
Pharrell said: “In a year where there is so much turmoil in the world, from social conflict to climate change, we need moments to stop and celebrate happiness. Protecting our planet is fundamental to the pursuit of human happiness and that is why we have chosen to support Live Earth’s movement to raise a billion voices for climate action. We believe that happiness can change the world.”
Pharrell is turning the Empire State Building yellow today to mark the occasion.
The event will be educational and inspiring to the students of New York and across the country, in the aim of helping the youth to shape a better future for themselves in which they can all attain the utmost important goal of happiness. In addition, the UN officials and experts are offering live stream talks for those who cannot attend the event.
The UN has put together a “happiness playlist” featuring Ed Sheeran, David Guetta and James Blunt, while Pharrell has been enlisted to invite people to upload a picture of themselves which will be combined into a huge animated GIF set to his song “Happy”. Meanwhile, the movement Action For Happiness offers a “free Happiness Pack” for download. Find out more on The International Day of Happiness website.
One of the founders of Action For Happiness, Professor Richard Layard of the London School of Economics, takes all his ‘happiness’ talk very seriously. “Our society,” he says, “would be happier if it took happiness more seriously.” So, we might scoff at misguided attempts of pushing happiness upon us today, but we can still do something nice today – even it’s only smiling at everyone. 🙂
In honour of this happy day we’ve put together our own #FeelingHappy playlist – so kick your shoes off, relax and prepare to feel good! 🙂
