Lungs went to Number One in the UK album charts and stayed there for 28 weeks, the “dark, robust and romantic” sound of Florence and The Machine relate to Renaissance artists (influenced by her mother’s studies of the subject, “We’re dealing with all of the same things they did: love and death, time and pain, heaven and hell”. Welch has suffered depression since her rise to fame and notes that, “sex, violence, love and death, are the topics that I’m constantly wrestling with”.
