A new trailer for the crime thriller Black Mass has been released and Johnny Depp is virtually unrecognisable. Depp underwent a massive physical transformation to play the notorious US gangster James 'Whitey' Bulger. America’s most wanted man is supported by an incredible cast that includes Benedict Cumberbatch as Bill Bulger – Whitey’s brother and onetime Massachusetts senator, Joel Edgerton as FBI agent John Connolly and Jesse Plemons as crook Kevin Weeks.
Set in the 70s in South Boston, the drama tells the story of the unholy alliance between FBI Agent John Connolly and Bulger after he persuades the Irish mobster to collaborate with the FBI.
Based on a true story and a book of the same name by Dick Lehr and Gerard O'Neill the film shows what happens as Bulger was allowed to evade the law whilst still consolidating his power. Whitey was an FBI informant for more than 30 years, while taking out any opposition to his Winter Hill Gang. He was one of the most ruthless and dangerous gangsters in US history.
Directed by Scott Cooper, Black Mass opens in US theatres on September 18 and November 13 in the UK. The world premiere will take place at the Venice Film Festival at the beginning of September.
