#ThrowbackThursday We go back to 1969 with the one hit wonders Zager & Evans who started a six week run at Nº1 on the Billboard Hot 100 with the science fiction-themed In The Year 2525 (Exordium And Terminus) - a description of what will become of man when technology takes over. The song was also a Nº1 on the UK charts, making the duo the only one hit wonders to have a Nº1 in both the US and the UK.
This bleak and futuristic tale is a highly unusual song, but then 1969 was a highly unusual year. In March two futuristic sci-fi movies were awarded Oscars - Planet Of The Apes and 2001: A Space Odyssey. In July David Bowie’s Space Oddity was released and a week after In the Year 2525 hit Nº1 Apollo 11 astronauts made history when they set foot on the moon.
The sub-title of the track Exordium et Terminus means "Beginning and End" and it certainly reflected the worry of the times and also the wonder of technology. It became the Record of The Year staying at Nº1 longer than any other single released that year, beating Aquarius/Let the Sunshine In and Sugar, Sugar as well as classic Nº1s from The Beatles, Elvis Presley and The Temptations.
The American folk-rock duo of Denny Zager and Rick Evans never had another charting song and disbanded in 1971 after the release of their third album. Denny Zager now builds custom guitars in Lincoln, Nebraska.
